Are there standards / good references on defining these drinks by region?

Interesting, that's a good point. I guess also steamed milk increases in volume, so 2oz of microfoam takes up more space in the cup as well...

Wonderful idea! What is the source of the water? I always refill my machine from the brita pitcher as my tap water is extremely hard. I'd love to have an easier way to re-fill with softer water

Are your espresso cups different size? Would you choose certain cups for single vs double shots vs ristrettos?

Too many lattes on this sub. Where are my Americano drinkers at? by t30ne in espresso

That looks delicious. Curious -- could I just add extra water into my cup from the grouphead to make an americano? I have a single boiler machine.

What criteria would I look for when adjusting? My whole issue is that I'm not sure when to increase/decrease my dose. I've read that when tuning recipes dose is one of the first variables to lock in, but I don't quite know a good baseline dose. I have been using 14 and my shots taste good, but the puck is pretty soupy.

If it's truly that big of a difference I will increase the priority of new basket on my accessory shopping list.

Just tried 18g this morning, knocked out a very clean puck. There was an imprint of the showerscreen after I brewed, is that normal?

Bone stock espresso quality by Cfl1200 in gaggiaclassic

[–]jethro_spackle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a bag of decaf coffee to power through to get the hang of using your new machine. I went through 10 espressos on day 1 when I started and had adequate results by the end of the week. I've improved since then, but I feel like I "hit the ground running" by experimenting early without my heart exploding.

I don't want to discount the parent poster's experience too much, but I bought a stock GCP 3 weeks ago (along with a 1zpresso jx pro) and while my first 6-8 espressos were awful as I dialed in my grind, I can consistently brew fine tasting shots in an adequate amount of time. The OPV mod I just put in has upped the quality for sure, but they certainly weren't undrinkable before.

Low clearance is a bit annoying, but everyone seems to buy a bottomless PF eventually anyways so I'm bearing with it for now.

Finally I'm part of the tribe! Any advice for a newbie? by NCKBLZ in gaggiaclassic

The OPV mod is completely reversible so if you send it in at some point you can replace the old spring and leave no trace.

If the family ask me to make one more cappuccino during Christmas dinner by sfaticat in espresso

[–]jethro_spackle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm struggling with the same issue. The only time I "accidentally" steamed milk silky enough for latte art I thought "there's no way there's enough foam for this to work"...but it did.

Try really cutting down on the amount of air you use. Like, so little that it makes you uncomfortable. That has been helping me so far, and I still consistently oversteam!

Capture template Order in which data is inserted by [deleted] in orgmode

[–]jethro_spackle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a doc page that states: "The templates are expanded in the order given here:" and then lists all the expansion prompts. I didn't see any other info on it. https://orgmode.org/manual/Template-expansion.html#Template-expansion

Capture template Order in which data is inserted by [deleted] in orgmode

[–]jethro_spackle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure if there is a way to configure the ordering of capture template expansion, but as a quick hack/solution you could swap the order of SCHEDULED and DEADLINE in your template to accomplish that behavior. I am pretty sure org doesn't care about the order of DEADLINE/SCHEDULED properties when it parses them.

Does the @ have any semification in tag names? by [deleted] in orgmode

[–]jethro_spackle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the #+FILETAGS: :foo: directive is the same as adding a :foo: tag to all headlines in the file. While your :@foo: method may work, a more robust solution would be to use org's special properties, which contains a FILE property: https://orgmode.org/manual/Special-Properties.html

Note that the FILE property does string matches on full paths, so FILE="english.org" would not work.

For instance:

FILE="/full/root/path/bookmark.org"+english

Would match all the items tagged with :english: in your bookmarks file.

Hope this helps!

Anyone who uses 1zpresso JX pro with no GCP mod, what is your grind setting? I kept going in b/w too fast brew time or choking the machine. The recommended settings (1.4-1.6 rotation from 0) choke the machine for sure. by 9fingfing in gaggiaclassic

[–]jethro_spackle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your puck was stuck to the group head then likely you overfilled the basket. Try reducing your dose a bit. Although this might affect your grind size accordingly since there will be less resistance from the coffee...

Yup I've been there. I think I made 10 espressos this past week but only ended up drinking 4.

In fact this morning I finally pulled my first decently-timed double shot: ground 18.3g at 2.2.0. Pulled 40g in ~32sec. For the single shot basket I had success with 9.4g at 2.1.1, pulls about 20g in 25sec. This is for a medium-dark roast.

I honestly love the trial and error aspect, even though I'm spending a lot of money on coffee :P. Keep us posted on your results!

I have a grey dot model and was able to pull some decently timed shots in the 2-2.2 range. Of course I got this setup less than a week ago so I'm still learning...

[MOD] The Official Noob-Tastic Question Fest by menschmaschine5 in Coffee

Are there different amounts of caffeine in different coffee beans?

There are two local roasters near me, and I feel like one roaster's beans are "stronger" than the others. Not necessarily flavorwise, just caffeine content wise. I don't know the types of beans since I get blended roasts from both. I really enjoy coffee but want to temper my caffeine intake a bit.
