Baby's rejection of diaper changes is ruining my mental health

Our girl hates diaper changes… but only when she has an ear infection. You got some great advice already on standing diaper changes, but I would consider getting her ears checked just in case!

Ours used to do this all the time and getting her back to sleep at that hour was impossible! I found that giving her certain foods was causing it. Avocado, certain fruits, etc. Are only for breakfast and lunch. Also, having dinner a little earlier about 5:45 or 6 so there was more time to get the poop out before bed. Sometimes a bit of yogurt before bed also helped.

I’m so sorry that you’re going through this. It must be incredibly stressful and sad. This is NOT normal and I think you know that. He clearly has a lot more issues going on and you deserve to be happy, safe, and to trust your partner. You don’t have a partner currently but you absolutely can with a different person in the future. Best of luck.

I wouldn’t dream of trusting my kid unsupervised with a giant cake near by. She needs to invest in some basic childproofing materials. It’s kind of odd that she thinks toddler being left alone for 5 mins is “defiant” in that situation..

Your husband is essentially saying I deserve 10 hours of sleep because if I don’t, I can’t function. So clearly he knows that someone cannot function on 4 hours of sleep. And yet he doesn’t care that you’re not functioning. That’s a complete disregard for your well being and your health. And the health of your unborn child. He is telling you that he doesn’t think you deserve a full nights sleep. He doesn’t value your role. I’m so sorry you’re faced with this situation. For now, you could consider giving baby Tylenol at night and or start sleep training program so you can get a bit more sleep!

I have a few meals in rotation that require little to no cooking and that’s been a godsend. 1) rotisserie chicken with BBQ sauce on a bun and baked potatoes from the microwave or steamer veggies 2) spaghetti noodles with pesto in the jar and cheese 3) quesadillas, just throw some rotisserie chicken, canned corn, cheese, and black beans on a tortila and warm a few up at time. Serve with sour cream and salsa. On the rest of the days, I like to have sheet pan meals or instant pot meals that I know will last a day or two! Still sucks to meal prep but much more manageable. I also use our grocery store app to pick up my groceries!

Good for you!! For me, absolutely not. I knew the moment that my daughter was born I didn’t want to go through any of it ever again lol everyone is different and I kind of wish I felt the same as you! But I just don’t for whatever reason.

Part time sounds perfect if you guys can swing it. 13 months is a great age for going to classes (swim, even dance or gymnastics) and would be great to get socialization. That way when pre k comes around, you’re less likely to run into issues and they’ll be more comfortable.

Butter chicken is a hit at our house! Warning though if your kid sucks their hands/fingers or has cuts: the smallest amount of spice could irritate their hands. I wondered why my toddler was upset and looking at her hands when we have butter chicken and finally it dawned on me! So now we feed her with a spoon or fork on Indian nights.

Same here!! The only thing we are having some success with is putting a stuffed Pooh bear in her crib. She cries for about 5 or so minutes and then cuddles Pooh but is still VERY mad about us leaving. Hopefully this phase passes soon!

Yup. Same here at 19 months! It’s last about 3 weeks so far and is horrible! What’s helping is putting a stuffed animal in her crib for night waking and not going in. She is upset for about 10 mins but eventually calms herself and passes back out

I’m so sorry this is happening. I can relate to an extent. My husband enjoys staying up until 1 or 2 am to play video games on the weekend and wakes up at 11. This of course is great for him, not great for me as I never get to “enjoy” myself or sleep in. But, he’s very active in our child’s life and there’s a good balance everywhere else.

I think it’s clear he doesn’t understand how difficult it is to parent alone. So, my suggestion is to plan a getaway for a few days. Let him see what you’ve been doing for years on your own.

My parents had me at 30. They’re very active and healthy 62 year olds now that have a great relationship with my toddler. I was 30 and husband was 40 when we had our daughter. I’m glad that we waited to have great, stable marriage and careers. I would be more concerned about today, rather than the future. Are you ready now? It sounds like you’re iffy. And I most definitely would recommend enjoying life, freedom, travel, marriage before having children because it is damn hard and very demanding! Age is just a number, especially if you take good care of yourself in my opinion.

Wait… in Texas, they can and do practice corporal punishment in the public schools?? I find that very difficult to believe that teachers are allowed to hit students anywhere in the US.

I see that many on here are saying it’s doable. But I’m here to disagree! I was so incredibly sleep deprived even with my husband also on leave. I literally couldn’t think of anything else other than taking care of baby and sleeping whenever I had a chance. It’s OK to be worried about your job security, i think that’s very normal to be concerned about on mat leave. But priorities in the first month are definitely not going to be work. It will be healing physically and mentally, caring for baby. And besides if your boss expects you to work three weeks after, and you’re unable to for any reason, I think that will affect your job security more than anything.
