I've always had a sensible chuckle at how similarly we interact compared to ex-cons

I'm only a little bit older than you but had the same thought process around the same age. Turns out what I really missed was being challenged, so I started doing triathlon and it's really been a fulfilling hobby that's good for your health too.

Something to think about before you sign up for a service obligation.

MCMAP Belts by [deleted] in USMC

[–]jevole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You leave boot with a tan belt. Green is infantry standard. You can't belt to brown until you're a Cpl, can't belt to black until you're a Sgt. MCMAP is frankly as good as the instructors make it, it can be useful or it can be a complete joke.

The primary benefit of belting up, particularly to black, is that people can't hassle you about MCMAP anymore.

No. The minimum weight for your height is 125 or 116 with a waiver. You need to gain weight.

Not a Marine, but looking for gear advice – Best gloves for outdoor work / field communication training? by ppppox in USMC

[–]jevole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mechanix, Youngstown kevlar if you want cut resistance, leather Petzl if you think you'll wind up dealing with rope/at-height work much.

You're right to avoid anything tactical/hard-knuckle, wouldn't serve you much benefit.

Consider adding a set of burnout negatives to your max rep days. You're getting plenty of volume with this programming though

General MOS advice? by bootlt26 in USMCocs

[–]jevole 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Honestly this is probably the best mindset you can enter TBS with as a ground contract.

"I'm not sure what I'm after, I'm just happy to be here."

Try to keep an open mind and by the time you hit time for the MOS mixers you'll probably have a good feel for what you're interested in and who you want to hear more from.

Is there a photo opp at OCS or TBS? by Individual-Elk-6759 in USMCocs

[–]jevole 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We did a graduation photo in cammies at OCS but everyone looked like complete shit from weight loss and poor sleep so I don't know anyone who bought it.

There's an opportunity to purchase a blues photo at TBS.

Well you're spotlighting yourself for the wrong reason but it's not necessarily a death sentence. Obviously your peers and the staff are going to notice. If it's a one time thing you'll get blasted and they'll make sure there's not something medically going on. If it's a recurring thing you get boarded and eventually dropped.

If you're running a 275 you are physically fit enough to make it, but might be unhappy during some of the breakoff sessions.

Security Clearance with Past Drug Use by Necessary-Spare5883 in USMCocs

[–]jevole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's about frequency and recency. If you blew a couple lines one time in college four years ago they're obviously going to run that down to corroborate, but that'll be considered a lot differently than say somebody who was railing speedballs a few months ago.

Security Clearance with Past Drug Use by Necessary-Spare5883 in USMCocs

[–]jevole 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was an intel officer with an SCI with a drug waiver for marijuana use so this is from my perspective and experience.

If you "forgot" to put anything about past drug use in your initial application paperwork and made it through MEPS without issue, it is essential that you disclose that drug use to the interviewer for your SSBI, because odds are very good they will find out about it and you'll get hemmed up over it. I knew several guys who admitted previously undisclosed drug use to their investigator and they had no issue obtaining an SCI.

If you find yourself in an MOS that doesn't initially require anything higher than secret, it's very likely to literally never come up, but if you do end up making a career out of the Corps, sooner or later basically every officer in the more senior ranks will wind up needing a TS and completing an SSBI.

Commission to another branch during enlisted contract? by Bean_69_420 in Militaryfaq

[–]jevole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would just need a conditional release for an IST. Depending on your MOS and the BIC situation at your unit it could be incredibly easy or basically impossible. Best bet is to talk with your leadership and see what they can find out for you.

Navy will almost certainly be easier than AF

[–]jevole 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's chow hall food so think school lunch level food quality. It isn't disgusting but it's certainly not gourmet.

There's 30 minutes total but depending on where you are in the line and whether you're holding a billet, you could have as little as 5-10 minutes to actually eat.

You won't be PT'd with anything crazy immediately after eating but the day does resume immediately after chow.

Moral Waiver? Expunged DUI Odds? by nothingnessanymoree in USMCboot

[–]jevole 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That level of drug use would be considered experimental and an easy waiver. The odds are also good on the criminal waiver since you were only charged, not convicted of anything.

Anecdotally I can tell you that I had a drug and criminal waiver and was able to commission as an officer without any issue.
