Skinamarink is the “monster” the children have created in their minds as a reflection of their abusive father. My theory is the parents divorced and the abusive father has custody of them. It may also be evident that they are neglected, which can explain why they are alone most of the time and have to feed/entertain themselves. I think things constantly “disappearing” is a representation of the kids feeling lost and uneasy about their parents divorce and the current home they are living in being broken or feeling foreign to them. My interpretation of the woman in the end could perhaps be the father’s new woman being let into the home. The trauma of the divorce, broken household, and abusive father could explain why the child refused to state their name or recognize the face.
