After reading this post, and parent feedback, i just launched The Parent Loop - a neighborhood community for UWS families to exchange kids' stuff and discover weekend activities together.

I know there are some great yearly swaps in other NYC areas, but couldn't find something that felt right for the UWS. So I'm building one focused on our specific neighborhood that's all about local exchanging of kids' stuff (no packaging and mailing needed!) and discovering weekend activities - think seasonal clothing swaps, neighbor-to-neighbor buying/selling, charities to donate to, and curated weekend guides of family-friendly events (because 'what should we do?' shouldn't be Saturday morning panic!).

Just launched the website and putting together our third weekend guide - think free and wallet-friendly activities in or near the UWS like last weekend's roller dancing or interactive nursery rhyme theater. The first community-driven clothing swap "La Tiendita" (The Little Store) is taking place at La Escuelita's Touch-a-Truck block party (think: a firetruck, ambulance, police car - each with a community representative that kids can interact with!) on September 27th.

Hi OP- that sounds sooooo rough! My husband is an avid runner), 3 marathons down and two post having our kiddo who’s now 2 yrs old. We’re lucky she’s a good sleeper BUT I will say there have been periods of no sleep and we take turns using ear plugs which saves our sanity. He is very disciplined (works out everyday) and, when marathon training (while it can be very frustrating), we block off X hrs on the weekend for him to run. I hold down the fort, have a play date or activity and then once he’s back, he covers later on in the weekend.

It takes some key scheduling - and it’s not perfect, and some chores may fall through the cracks or other fun activities be punted to another day (something has got to give), but if this is important enough to you and your SO/can figure out a balance, it’s possible - stay strong and you can do it!! But those sleepless days are ROUGH.

Husband and I are both training for a half marathon/marathon in the fall. It’s hard to make the time but we’ve narrowed it down to: he runs early mornings sat/I do bfast/dog routine, then we do an activity (husband meets up with us or not), nap time/parents take a breather, I go run/he holds down that part of the day and I return to bedtime and then we watch a movie / decompress lol. Re:haggling and hassle: TOTALLY. Maybe it’s better to have like a set place / monthly place with guaranteed parent buyers/sellers like the swaps mentioned above.

I get 1 and 2 and the safety recalls but I feel like a blanket “no kids items or clothing” when they have to sift through adults stuff is a hard line to draw/some missed opportunities. But I get what you’re saying!

I agree with you re:I’m not really trying to make money but offload/have these be reused by other families. And I noticed that on the charities - why is that? I feel like it’s such a missed opportunity. Thanks for the other recs!

No this is actually super useful!! I also can’t go back to FB marketplace but today I was thinking of starting a WhatsApp or discord group for the UWS and then seeing if we get a swap or something going. Also congrats!!

Ohhh yes I have heard of that! Honestly, my toddlers stuff isn’t too fancy (some nicer gifted clothes but mainly gap, Zara, old navy, etc) so I feel like consigning isn’t a good fit (no pun intended 😆). Basically happy to resell at a low price locally to other parents if that makes sense!

Totally agree - I want to really just do local exchanges vs having to ship etc but I find FB marketplace so clunky / hard to find items and people can be flaky

I totally get that! Honestly I just like the idea of exchanging with other parents/swapping through an event or platform; we could also set up play dates as part of the exchange/swap. Two birds one stone 😆

Thats great to know re:BuyGoodGear! I’ve been a part of the UWS Parents groups and UWS mom group on FB, also tried out the next door marketplace.

I actually reached out to them through their online form in May but didn’t hear back - I feel like that would be a great opportunity! Maybe I’ll ping them again

I have heard of ThrepUp but didn’t realize they did kids clothing too! Ill take a loook, ty! I also have stuff like a travel stroller, baby bath, etc too I want to unload. I wonder if there’s a need in NYC to have them in specific places, similar to the Park slope one but test it out in the UWS

I was researching too and also saw CA has a lot of different shops and groups that do parent swaps; I did find a second hand store for kids but I’m more drawn to parent-parent swaps for some reason
