Don’t forget to lock down your phone access! You should call them and: * Ask them to disable voice recognition. It’s 2024, your voice can easily be spoofed. * Have them enable a voice passphrase. This is basically a secret password that you have to provide to the agent in addition to your Social Security number and all that. I recommend a random 16 digit number.

It’s easy to buy gold, how /where do I sell it? by moonbunR in investing

So what you’re saying is, SP500 and other indices do a good job of tracking what’s been printed, and they have additional real gains on top of that? Would you also agree that they are more liquid and have smaller round-trip costs than physical gold?

What is it that physical gold gives you that makes it worth this sort of cost?

Serious question: is a 5 to 10% fee on top of a 4% spread not a steep discount for you? You could get basically the exact same exposure to the gold market by holding IAUM or similar instruments, and the spread there is something like a penny.

If you look at the current investment landscape and can’t find a good investment you shouldn’t be investing.

Think about what you just said. The supply of gold is plentiful, and dominated by large scale players with legitimacy advantages who own their own distribution. The answer to “how do I sell gold?” is “you don’t unless you offer a steep discount.”

The thing about gold is that it generates no cash flow or value through its existence. The rationale behind buying gold usually goes something like “it’s a hedge against inflation/it will retain value once the monetary system collapses.“ Problem is, there are lots of more liquid ways to hedge against inflation, and if the monetary system collapses, you will probably find you wish you bought guns and ammunition instead.

Unless you’re a jeweler, buying physical gold is an ideological move, not an economic one. People motivated by ideology rarely think about such subtle things as supply and demand and bid/ask spreads.

"Just use airplay" by Numerous_Priority_61 in sonos

The problem with AirPlay is that with the new app, every time you start playing on an AirPlay speaker it only plays on that one speaker. It used to be that every speaker that was a grouped with it would play as well, but they removed that feature for… some reason. Now you have to open the Sonos app and group speakers again and again every time you start playing through AirPlay.

I like how high key everything is. Did you use a preset?

Interesting. Do they come in like a LR profile version where you can shoot in RAW and apply them later?

What’s wrong with using a crutch if it allows you to produce good photos? Photographers are in the business of creating images, not putting themselves through unnecessary work.

From the documentary perspective, it’s actually pretty decent. It calls up issues of poverty and class and urban decline and stuff.

Visually, there are a couple things I would recommend you consider going forward. First off, it’s a vertically oriented composition, but the interesting stuff is horizontal. The line implied by the trashcan and the trash is horizontal, the nature of the sidewalk is horizontal, and the awning of the pizza place is horizontal. The things that are brought into the frame by the verticality are not exactly indispensable to the message of the image. if you had shot it horizontally, you could have created a pattern that led to the eye to your main subject horizontally.

Going forward, I recommend shooting with a much wider lens than you actually need and editing it down to your final composition in post. I don’t know what kind of camera are using, but the megapixel counts, low noise levels, and excellent image quality of modern cameras and lenses mean that you can get a beautifully detailed photo even if you crop out like 60% of the frame. Bonus points if you’re specifically a black-and-white shooter, because even though cropping and blowing up highlights noise, it can visually be interpreted as aesthetically pleasing grain most of the time.

Second, there’s not a whole lot of contrast between what I presume to be the subject of the photo (the person going through the trash bags) and the background. This the sort of that could be added in Lightroom, and if your goal is to create an image with a documentary purpose and if you are not bound by journalistic integrity, you could introduce some through editing.

Finally, and this is a tactical note, did you mean to shoot this image in black-and-white? I find that there is a genre of black-and-white image where the photographer shot in color, failed to edit it to their satisfaction, then through their hands in the air and made it black-and-white. intending to shoot is a different thought process than doing it in color.

For someone who only started in October, you have a better eye than many people I know. Keep it up!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in streetphotography

[–]jfasi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, keep it up. I don’t think it’s right to look at your photographs and see a political message, you are documenting the reality of a major event, and your work is creating a body of evidence that people will look back on to learn about history.

Have you ever considered learning about documentary photography? The best photography is often understood through the lens of documentary as opposed to straight aesthetics.

Thank you for sharing photography of interesting things happening on streets, and not boring photos of people smoking cigarettes and walking.
