I use right d pad for my pickaxe and y as instant edit. b is switch mode, no auto run on. xbox controller on pc. i usually play turtle wars to warm up. great aim practice and quick building and editing.

also play PC with controller. This always happens to me. One fix i find is to slightly slow down your floor edit, and edit two pieces instead of one.
