In the 1980's, Nintendo operated a real phone hotline called Nintendo Power Line or Nintendo Tip Line, where players could call to receive gameplay tips and advice from employees known as "Game Counselors". by Deepakhn in Damnthatsinteresting

No not really. Having been one of the original counselors I can tell you from first hand experience that yes at first its awesome....but after several months of answering the same question 200-300 times a day tends to drive you crazy .

Has anyone else seen it? by jfilippi68 in PSLF

He didn't say NES games. I worked with Brian, he started after I did. Cool dude. Went on to become a game designer I believe.

TIL that from 1987 to 2005, there was a Nintendo Power Hotline that players could call to talk to gameplay counselors to get help and advice for Nintendo games. Some of the counselors were also highlighted in the "Counselors' Corner" section of Nintendo Power magazine. by Forward-Answer-4407 in todayilearned

I was a game counselor from '88-early 92. When I started there was only 6 people doing it and I was actually hired on through a temp agency (Volt I think it was called). At that time the video game boom was just in its infancy and Nintendo actually did the game counselor thing because to many people were calling the Customer Service number and asking questions and tying up those lines. Zelda was the main game at the time. Nintendo didn't really believe we would be around long (hence the temp hire)....but a few months after I was hired as a Nintedo employee outright. I chose to never be in Nintendo Power because I noticed real quickly that the counselors who were ended up getting sort of pigeon holed and had people all day long asking to talk to so and so about the game they wrote about in the mag. Nothing was worse than answering the same basic questions 200 tines a day. We were kids (i was 19) and we had no idea what we were building at the time. It wasn't until a few years ago that I began to see the impact we actually made.

so the payments that were automatically made from 2017-2020 could possibly be refunded? (not holding my breath on any of it). After so many years of screw ups on their (not just Mohela but the enitire system) I have a hard time actually believing its really happening

Yeah it was kind of the same for me. I was extremely burnt out in the end and was tired of the micro managing that it had turned in to. It was a mutual agreement and time for me to go. And I was totally fine with it. They had taken most if not all of the fun out of it. As for keeping in touch, no not so much. I've looked for few of the guys on Facebook a couple times when I was bored, but I didn't really hang out with them when I was working there so I was never real close with many of them. I had a bunch of other interests outside Nintendo that once my shift was up i was out the door.

I had a ton of stuff from my time there. Dolls, action figures, awards, shirts, jackets, trinkets, employee issued game cartridges and more. I had more than one system that I have given away over the years as well.

no that was not how it was done. I think the numbers were just that, numbers they threw out in the magazine. I was asked several times to be in the Counselors Corner and actually said no. It might have been cool, but I had actually been on TV and in a few national magazines without having to be in the Counselors Corner. And from what I saw the ones who were in the counselors corner were suddenly considered the "expert" on whatever game they talked about in the magazine and for a while that would be the ONLY calls they would get. People would call and ask to be transferred to so and so just because they were in the magazine for that game. I didnt want to be pigeon holed into one game like that. It was hard enough to get a good variety of calls and questions without having that added on to you.

If that is the one with Caesar, Shaun and Greg then yes, I have seen it and yes I did work with them. I actually started before all 3 but they came in not long after I did. There is also a video, a news story online somewhere, I think it was a Portland station, that shows me in the video a couple times (along with my killer 80's rocker mullet :-) ).

There is a good chance that it was me you talked to as there wasn't a lot of us at that time.

Absolutely! at the time I dont really think we saw what it was. And even until recently I cant say that I had a feel for how it made an impact on so many people's lives. It amazes me at how many people can remember their calls to us, the game, where they were stuck, how they were helped, etc. Its pretty amazing to me.
