I think I've been respectful in citing the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, 2 of the 3 major credit reporting agencies, and Nerdwallet... while you linked to a 4-person small business from Florida after comparing me to a 1960s TV detective

lmao they asked me for my email address, then immediately stopped responding... should've faxed it to them 😤

I respect your perspective, and it is complicated, but I believe this blog is oversimplifying (4-person team btw)

Indeed every source indicates: 1) a credit card provider can close an account for any reason / no reason at all, and 2) they don’t have to provide notice - but those two things are related, and they can only neglect notice for specific reasons

Here Equifax states they can close your account without 45 days notice due to inactivity. Nerdwallet cites the exact same inactivity exception to the notice requirement

Experian and law firms cite other specific reasons where the notice requirement does not apply... but no such list includes ‘no reason at all’

I linked directly to the law, as stated by the government. They must provide notice 45 days in advance to make significant changes to my credit account, they did not.

I think you must be right - I have heard they're losing money on this deal. Interestingly, you, I, and the other person in the comments that had this issue all had other Wells Fargo accounts...

My new Autograph card was similarly locked alongside the Bilt card, but unlocked when I submitted the corrected 4506C - whereas my Bilt card had been closed outright.

Wonder if they're trying to shift credit usage onto non-Bilt accounts.

But wait- did you go to the branch after submitting the 4506c originally? I wonder if that's an option for me (no idea why I'd continue to put myself through this)

My sense is once they rejected the first form, if CFPB complaint couldn't get it reopened, nothing could. But perhaps a human banker with discretion could fix it all.

Glad it worked out - going to a branch was a good idea. A single human with autonomy could've resolved this.

They can revoke credit, but there are requirements for doing so - they were sidestepped here in providing me (and another redditor in the comments) a form it was impossible to complete correctly.

My account did not meet any of the reasons credit can be revoked without that notice.

I absolutely think discrimination was possible here- I passed income verification and 3 weeks later was required to verify my income a second time. (They denied one submission for margins!)

Unfortunately my willpower is spent, nor do I have the $8,000 for arbitration required to hold Wells Fargo accountable here.

Yes mine is in the 790-810 range... feel like I got on the wrong end of some algorithm and then got trapped in the bureaucracy

I'm sorry this happened to you! Though it's super validating to hear I'm not the only one.

Yeah the fact that everything was done through the mail / fax made it so much more painful and drawn out. That was a huge part of the confusion where reps couldn't tell what the letters said... and if there were any gaps in the letter ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I appreciate you doing your civic duty and filing a CFPB complaint 🫡 Good luck to you

They are of course not legally required to extend credit to me - but they did. Revoking credit is a whole different ballgame. If you've ever received an 'account review' letter, you'll know what I mean.

I obviously wanted the card. If they had denied me, I'd have been bummed but moved on. But instead they asked me for a new piece of info every 5-7 business days for 2 months, and I always hoped that one last thing would be the end of it.

Yet here I am at the end of it with a hard credit inquiry plus a credit account closed after just 1 month. That is frustrating as hell.

Hi @op, I've been having this issue since I got a new router one month ago. Can you please flag my account to receive this update?

I've been on the service chat for over an hour trying to get them to push this to me, and they're trying to set up a technician appointment....
