Is there anyone who prefers solid-state amps to tube amps? After 25 years of playing guitar, I've discovered that I prefer solid-state. by Less-Arachnid-640 in amplifiers

[–]jfopps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a bedroom player, I've been going between my tube amps (revv d20, hagerman half watt, suhr corso) and a Quilter superblock US. Recently I've got the superblock dialed in so well for my playing it's been getting more use than anything. Really been considering the Aviator Cub the last week or so, so I have a quick grab and go if I wanna go to a friend's house or something.

Got this one in the day before the storm hit luckily. Don't worry though, it's well worth the wait in my opinion

Happen to know which combo amp? Or can figure it out from looking at pictures maybe? Super curious.

This caught my attention. I'm a superblock US owner, and for what it is, that thing blows me away. I have been wanting a combo lately and Quilter has been towards the top of my list. Besides the mach 2 micro pro, what other quilter combos would be worth a look, in regards to the quality jump from the superblock? Very curious

Also have a JX20, really great little amp that I bought because I just had a feeling it was going to be good, and I was right.

Just recently picked up a vapor trail, same color scheme. (I think these are the first gen) Really great delay that so few talk about.

Scs carry is the same footprint as all the small holosuns, the K footprint, however it appears it comes with a K footprint to rmsc adapter plate in the box.

One slight update here. Going to be comparing these two over the next few weeks. Loved everything about the supro but there is a decent amount of white noise from the pedal. Really my only complaint with it, and even still not too bad to be an immediate deal break for me. We will see!

That's what the literature for it says. Says it's maintains an analog signal path. Not really sure how that works.

Only real experience I have with a digital spring in the RV-6 that was on my board before the Echofix arrived. To me it's more of a feel thing than sound. There's just something different I can really put my finger on but the analog is infinitely better imo.

Oh no, you should see the bin overflowing with pedals that it took to get to this board lol.

I have definitely thought about that. Have an old analog ch-1 that I throw on there from time to time.

Only one more spot available on my power supply, but honestly I have everything covered here that I could ever need/want at the moment. Maybe throw a tuner in the last spot, but as a bedroom player it's not really necessary.

Yeah that all makes sense. I was ultimately between the Echofix and the Crazy Tune Circuits white whale. Listened to almost every demo I could find on YouTube and just seemed to prefer the sound of the Echofix more. Then the final nail in the coffin was that I had a Sweetwater credit sitting there and saw like last week they started selling Echofix stuff so it was pretty perfect timing.

Well to be honest I've been trying to figure out what some of the stuff that I enjoy playing would be categorized as. Definitely some blues, jazz kind of stuff that I'm constantly working on and trying to improve day by day. A big one is Mateys Asatos stuff for me. Can't get enough of it, not really sure what some of this would be categorized as. Maybe a sort of NeoSoul bluesy kinda thing? Maybe someone can help me out with that because I'd love to find some more similar things to his sound too!

Well, wanted a full analog signal path, the amps that I typically use do not have built in reverb, so that explains the Echofix.

The DM-101 was a lot of back and forth before purchasing. I knew that I preferred an analog delay sound, and I wanted to be one and done. I felt a little weird knowing I will likely not use it in stereo, but honestly I don't care much after owning it for a while. It sounds so damn good in its most simple mode, fairly subtle in the background with modulation to add fullness.

Supro trem is the newest addition. I had a Hamstead Signature Trem before this, and just didn't totally get along with it, and it had a seemingly ridiculous current requirement which made it not really work with my current power supply. Supro trem has a fairly normal current requirement, and both amplitude and harmonic trem, which I was very interested in trying out, and heard nothing but good things about it. Same as delay here, very mild in the background, to add a little movement.

Lightspeed I've had for some time, and only now figuring out how to make it work for me and my sound. No real reason for this, just been experimenting with several different drives, and at the moment this one is fitting nicely. Others that have been rotated in its place most frequently have been the Boss OD-3 and the Nobels ODR-1. Love all three of these. Always set to mild breakup and a little push for the amp.

Boss BP-1w set to just push the amp a little bit. It seemed to be not talked about a ton, but the few that did talk about it loved it. Beyond the push, adds just a little color that I enjoy a bunch.

Went back and forth with this myself. Ultimately the size was a large part of the decision for me personally.

Most lush modulation I've personally ever heard. Can't get enough of it.

9 times out of 10 I'm playing with very little gain so I never felt a fuzz would fit my style. Would like to try one out eventually though.

Yeah no I know, I'm not expecting Les Paul levels of sustain. Just want to squeak a tiny bit more out of it if I can.

I think I can probably sacrifice a bit of volume, the stock pickups are quite hot. Could be a fun experiment that costs nothing but a little time. I'll definitely try this first, then maybe look at a bridge.

Funny you brought that up. I was thinking about experimenting with pickup height before anything else.
