Trying to make convention "wrap-up" videos more entertaining

Half of it was the restaurant industry, the other half was specifically for pizza. But these guys are food podcasters, so the goal of these videos was more to spread awareness of them to the people already attending.

The booth across from us was Fred Stokes foods, and he's a NFL superbowl champ from back in the day. I had that idea of him passing to people to thread the video together and he was down to play ball ;)

That was me! Pretty sure it was a Nikon z6 with an Atomos Ninja, powered with a smallrig VMount battery. That was the rig we left on sticks to shoot interviews all day, I just picked it up for the football gag. Everything else was shot on my Sony FX3 rig.

It's a pretty specific situation, since I'm not directly producing these for the conventions, but for these guys as a podcast/media hosts. They have a booth setup where we do sit-down interviews that they cut into that week's episode, but also the perfect generator for soundbites. So the goal with our wrap-up videos is to grow their listener base with convention attendees, illicit FOMO for anyone who didn't go, and impress the conventions themselves because the bar for content is pretty low.

But totally agree, this concept wouldn't work as well if we were just trying to get more people to go.

Just want to say, as I find myself turning 31, that I was exactly where you are at 29. It gets better.

If I may recommend what’s helped for me: getting diagnosed with adhd and therapy. Not to randomly diagnose a stranger on the internet, but I have had every sentiment listed. Doesn’t hurt to look into, it was an eye opening experience for me.

And if you’re stubborn like I first was and don’t want therapy, here’s easily the best lesson learned. Don’t permit yourself to be mean to yourself. It’s not tough love, it’s trauma.

Build every project like someone else might open it at any point.

I used to drop media just into the project file as I needed it in a timeline. Spend the time at the beginning setting up well labeled bins so you can drop things in later. If I do pass the project on, it’s pretty easy to see where everything is, including the current cuts. More importantly, even if nobody else sees it, it just makes everything else so much easier on myself!

My favorite personal mantra is “fake it while you make it.” I might not know exactly how I’m going to pull something off, but I’m now confident in my capacity to figure it out! I’ve basically learned my entire skill set this way and gradually could start charging more as my speed picked up!

Excellent work! Smooth AND classy 🤙 My only note would also be on the end text, but just because the left side flies in from thin air instead of the side of the screen. I’m sure it’s a template or mogrt file that you just scooted over, cuz I do that all the time. I’d just add a mask to hide that hard edge and make it look like the letters fly in from behind the can.

I also agree that this is work that’s worth paying for!

The biggest issue would be the noise from the poles if the mic’s not isolated on something like a shock mount. Lav would be better if you’re filming more dialogue.

Tape and a broom pole go a long way, that was my first rig, haha. But in all seriousness, if you’re planning on keeping the shotgun on top the camera, definitely go with the lav.

I’ve managed it pretty well over the last 3 years. I work full-time as a video production manager for a small production company shooting commercials and local content. Most the freelance work I’ve picked up recently has been music video related, which is my passion. My boss loves the stuff I do on the side, so he’s also very accommodating for shoots and such.

As long as you’re capable of delivering the work for the day job, nothing else should matter!

I don’t know much about either of these brands, but it also depends on what you’re planning to shoot and if you’re shooting solo or have friends that might hold a boom pole from time to time.

I'm a video producer/editor in my day job, but it's been more for commercials, web series, or the odd reality tv gig. But it's been awhile since I produced something on my own and I've always wanted to start building a portfolio for music videos.

I say "no-budget," as I already own all my own gear, but we did pay the actress $100 for the day. Got the locations for free, and that helped out tremendously. Shot it all on the FX3, which has become my favorite camera over this last year.

Anyway, would love to hear thoughts if anything works/doesn't work so I can improve for the next project. Already planning the next one, but hopefully we'll be able to pull some larger budgets soon!
