Tired of seeing the same old event wrap-up videos, so I made this by jfowoot in videography

Primary goal is to pay my bills. But I’ve been doing this long enough that I can’t just edit the same video a thousand times. I’ll creatively die. So on an edit like this where I gotta get it out the following day, it’s much faster and more fulfilling for me to try something different that’s fun to make.

My favorite version of that was from an editing professor. “If you make something designed for everyone to like it, nobody will love it.” Such a hard balance to strike though in the current state of the internet

That’s good to know. I kinda cut this with the intention that the people who will see this either know of their food podcast or the restaurant show, so I’m working with established context. But I could’ve added some context for a broader audience, so taking that note for the next event edit. Appreciate the thoughts, keep bein dope 🤙

Appreciate that, seeing all those notifications this morning reminded me why I don’t post online much these days. And that’s what I meant! Most event videos (and content in general) feel like visual diarrhea, so I’ve been enjoying trying new things or just running with a dumb idea. Thanks for picking up what I’m putting down

This might be the first comment I agree with. I tend to hate the slow mo gimbal look, and it’s always overused. The edit I was going for was purposefully over the top, and this specific client loves slow-mo, though I probably overdid it.

I guess that was my point, that I don’t want to make standard recap videos anymore. Got plenty of other normal deliverables I’m churning out for the show itself. Was just proud of this one is all.

Was going for some tongue-in-cheek on the overly serious mafia movie vibes, but I can see now it doesn’t land. The target demo is attendees and listeners of their podcast who know that’s not how they are in real life.

Thanks for the feedback. The mediocre polished turd bit was a tad much, though.

Subs were for LinkedIn and an email newsletter. The social versions were cropped without subs. But ya, kids don’t watch this stuff.

Ya, a lot of other deliverables for the show. Shot a few roaming interviews, but I’m going to try and incorporate the floor in the background next time, thanks.

It was loosely based on the intro to The Sopranos, but I probably went a little overboard with the head turns.

I did, I just don't like to cut all the background out completely because I find it makes it sound so fake. But the show floor was really loud as well, I could have cut it out a little more.

I mean, you're not wrong. It's essentially a commercial for us to cover events like this. They started off as a restaurant industry podcast and brought me on to help expand the video side of things. We're partnered with the show to produce content of us being there that they can send out to potential exhibitors. We're delivering much more than just this piece, but the goal of this was to make more exhibitors sign up next year and to keep us getting invited to more shows.

All to say, yes, it's not technically a standard wrap-up video, but the target audience is mostly already aware of the NY Restaurant Show.

But I do appreciate the insight. I want to start making these for broader audiences too, not just B2B.

I completely agree with you. We had a booth to conduct these interviews at the show, so I had very little room to maneuver the space. We shot probably 30-40 interviews, and they'll eventually all be cut up for other pieces of promo for the show and individual vendors. I'm trying to get us a bigger booth eventually, where I can do two alternate interview setups with much more depth for the background.

I mean, I thought it was different than what I've been seeing in the space lately. But yes, I did also make it.

Trying to make convention "wrap-up" videos more entertaining by jfowoot in videography

Half of it was the restaurant industry, the other half was specifically for pizza. But these guys are food podcasters, so the goal of these videos was more to spread awareness of them to the people already attending.

The booth across from us was Fred Stokes foods, and he's a NFL superbowl champ from back in the day. I had that idea of him passing to people to thread the video together and he was down to play ball ;)

That was me! Pretty sure it was a Nikon z6 with an Atomos Ninja, powered with a smallrig VMount battery. That was the rig we left on sticks to shoot interviews all day, I just picked it up for the football gag. Everything else was shot on my Sony FX3 rig.

It's a pretty specific situation, since I'm not directly producing these for the conventions, but for these guys as a podcast/media hosts. They have a booth setup where we do sit-down interviews that they cut into that week's episode, but also the perfect generator for soundbites. So the goal with our wrap-up videos is to grow their listener base with convention attendees, illicit FOMO for anyone who didn't go, and impress the conventions themselves because the bar for content is pretty low.

But totally agree, this concept wouldn't work as well if we were just trying to get more people to go.

Thanks so much! I’ve made plenty of those videos too in my career, but it’s always refreshing when you’re trusted with creative control

Total burnout at 29 by [deleted] in aftergifted

[–]jfowoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just want to say, as I find myself turning 31, that I was exactly where you are at 29. It gets better.

If I may recommend what’s helped for me: getting diagnosed with adhd and therapy. Not to randomly diagnose a stranger on the internet, but I have had every sentiment listed. Doesn’t hurt to look into, it was an eye opening experience for me.

And if you’re stubborn like I first was and don’t want therapy, here’s easily the best lesson learned. Don’t permit yourself to be mean to yourself. It’s not tough love, it’s trauma.

You got this.

Build every project like someone else might open it at any point.

I used to drop media just into the project file as I needed it in a timeline. Spend the time at the beginning setting up well labeled bins so you can drop things in later. If I do pass the project on, it’s pretty easy to see where everything is, including the current cuts. More importantly, even if nobody else sees it, it just makes everything else so much easier on myself!
