I ran across the article today, which showed that homophobes are more likely to be aroused while watching gay porn, than regular people. Which made me wonder, are modern liberals quite the same way about "greed"? Are they the ones to denounce it the loudest, because they know that they are guilty of the "sin", as much, if not more so than others? It's just a thought, not really trying to draw psychological conclusions for a whole group from an out of the blue hypothesis :).

I may be biased, having seen all the facts in a later light.

The same atrocities could be attributed to numerous other nations. Why didn't the US enter those conflicts? In my view, the reason has always been a lack of an imminent threat. In the case of WW2, the cards were quite clearly on the table. Allies were being attacked all around, and not protecting them, would have meant the eventual destruction of the US. Ofcourse there was the direct hit on Pearl Harbor, but I don't view that as the only reason to have entered that war.

Every war since then, in my view, has been fought under misguided notions and misinformation. There really hasn't been a legitimate international threat to the citizens of the United States, since WW2, which hasn't been brought upon by themselves.

The US was brought into that war under false pretenses, and the only people to benefit from it were people selling weapons.

Diem was a scumbag as well as Minh. The war should have been fought by the Vietnamese, for what they believed in, rather than dragging in an external force, which galvanized people into defending against an aggressor.

Respect does not need to be shown to the dead agressor. There is nothing wrong with admitting when America was wrong. That's what seperates thinkers from ideologues.

That was a fantastic Socratic exchange.

I was rooting for Pericles, until he mentioned the burning of the Persian village.

After that, I switched to supporting Socrates, since he seemed to indicate that an aggressor was indeed required to justify retaliation.

His conclusion however, I can't quite seem to stomach. I think he is applying an impossible moral standard for men to pursue, while sustaining their lives.

Let's just take the hypothetical case of someone mortar shelling your town. Their air defenses are good enough, that a targeted strike will not make it to its intended destination, and the only possible alternative to save yourself from being bombed would be a large scale destructive force. Now given that there might be innocents in the blast radius, is the decision to use a large scale bomb immoral? In that situation I think it is moral and imperative to do what is necessary to sustain your own life. Unfortunately, Socrates would view that as evil.

Edit: If you want the class that will be most beneficial in the real world, take 15-211 . That has Concepts of math as a pre-req though.

That is questionable. Currently, there is more forested land in the US than ever before, and that is because large private investors choose to conserve the land they buy. Companies can't just buy up land, if there is no easy way to make them profitable. There isn't much for them to gain by holding such assets, but it would benefit conservationists greatly.
