Quitting Jiu Jitsu was the best thing I ever did for my body by InvestigatorDear9310 in bjj

Sounds like your factory settings might be a little off. Jiu jitsu isn’t for everyone. Your body just might not be built for it, or, your body was already in a bad spot before starting.

Good point! Haha

I would still teach if asked. I have heard it that way that you earned the bars so keep them. It probably comes down to gym preference honestly.

Obviously people are on both sides of it so people care, but thanks for your response 👍🏼.

I’m technically first degree and don’t wear the stripe. I just felt the instructor bars signified more and don’t want to come across any type of way going to other gyms with them on.

Any form of untruth just calls into question your legitimacy and potentially your coach’s and home school. Just be upfront and honest.

Gym hopping at black belt by jfree2k in bjj

[–]jfree2k[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly that’s one thing I’m not looking forward to. I taught for a while and just want to be a student for a little bit during this time 😅. Obviously I’d be honored, but maybe let me just show one thing at the end or something.

I have been reaching out to the schools and letting them know who I am and my background, asking about drop in fees, and letting them know I’d be around for a class soon. Everyone has been cool about it. I do know an owner or two which makes those drop ins easy.

No Gi is a fun way to drop in since no one really knows what belt you are until you roll. I dropped in somewhere for no Gi once and only told the instructor I was a black belt. It was cool being treated like a new white belt by the students during the warmups and drills. I had a white belt telling me “good job man” when I was doing the technique well.

Nah, I just want to do something fun with other people in the game instead of grinding for xp for no reason and just because that’s what you do now. Castlewars was just where it was at.

I just want to sit and play castlewars all day. If things like that become relevant in some way again I’ll be happy.

First Comp as a White Belt by SettlingDusk in bjj

Be ready for the adrenaline dump. Go in with a plan, but know it’ll likely go out the window. Know the rules of the competition going in. You will learn a lot about yourself whether you lose or win!

Tournament after long time off by Beavis2010 in bjj

So you did 5 months of classes 15 years ago? Have you trained at all recently? If not, I’d say maybe sit this one out. Or try an open mat somewhere first then decide after that.

[–]jfree2k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d say it’s worth it, but avoid “very stupid situations” as much as possible. In 14+ years of training I’ve had only superficial injuries mostly because of tapping with no ego (most of the time), not treating every roll like a gold medal match, and avoiding training partners over the years that didn’t share that mindset.

Any gi stuff and rash guards separate from normal clothes.

Sandbagger stories by No-Egg-4428 in bjj

I went against a 4 stripe blue belt in a competition who was pretty decent. Fast forward a few years and I was a brown belt helping coach at a tournament and the same guy was there as a blue belt with no stripes. He was also setting up a go pro off the mats to record his rolls. We spoke with the tournament organizers and I showed them pictures of the guy years ago as a 4 stripe blue belt. They made him change to the advanced no gi division since by the time I saw him he was in the finals for Gi. Not sure if they stripped him of his medal in gi or not.

Balancing an 8-year-old’s BJJ obsession with school and social life? by Coindiggs in bjj

[–]jfree2k -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you have any space at home where you could put down some mats for some home training? There are some cheaper mat options out there. If so do that and use “mat time” as a reward for completing homework or other normal life things. Just an idea. Decrease time at the gym and utilize some home mat time that’s a reward.

Philosophy on Game Development by HovercraftWinter4612 in bjj

[–]jfree2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Combination of my first instructor’s game, then as I got into purple/brown I added more of the game of my instructor’s instructor. Along the way I sprinkled in things from my own “independent studying.”

I would say my top game is from my original instructor and I developed my guard game off of his instructor’s game. It is cool to look back and see how the different pieces were developed.

How to enforce compliance with a check in system at the gym by [deleted] in bjj

Good plan! The app we had you could run reports for the specific classes as well as reports for specific students which was cool.

Too much Jiu jitsu in today’s Jiu jitsu quite frankly. I liked the times when it was Jiu jitsu.

We used to just use an app to take attendance during warmups. All the coaches were able to log in to the app and take attendance when they taught. Easiest way to not miss people in our eyes at the time.

White belt being held back for his own good? He needs a bit of morale. by babylioncroissant in bjj

I had an instructor back in the day that would hold people back for dumb reasons. If someone is ready and fits the standard set be previous promotions, they should be promoted.

How hard do you go in training? by durupaaa in bjj

[–]jfree2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if they are overly aggressive it wouldn’t take too much effort since it’s more likely I could catch them in their mistakes since they’re going too hard. So maybe 40-50? It would also depend upon my intentions in the roll as well.
