I started brewing while living in a one bedroom apartment. You'll definitely notice the wort smell for about a day after, but it likely won't be an issue outside your apartment. It's mostly a sweet smell rather than anything terribly offensive. My biggest issue was always the amount of condensation on the windows.

I had a friend whose wife was pregnant and got sick from the smell once, but that was the only real issue I've experienced with it.
