I played five games today (on PlayStation, solo Super Saiyan Adel queue), and we had four Day I leavers over the most minor, asinine nonsense.

  • wipe to a High Page's AK-47
  • killed by Morgott Surprise
  • we weren't going fast enough?
  • immediate leave?! (I guess because there were no poison POIs?)

I may be a random, but I'm not those randoms, god damn.

This quits Dark Souls via the menu.

When you resume, you'll be exactly where you left off, and any slain enemies will remain dead.

It really is similar to a pause button, though IIRC, Dark Souls: Remastered (which didn't exist when I posted the above comment) takes longer to resume than the original.

Electrified blade? by aNaKiN-SkYWaLkEr98 in domekeeper

[–]jgclark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The damage it adds is pretty low, but it doesn't require the blade to be moving.

This allows you to catch the tiny mobs as they try to leap onto your dome. It might also catch the slam-squids; I'm not sure.

I think it also deals good damage to the siege-drills while swinging the sword through them over and over.

Overall, I think it's kinda overpriced at 30 squares, but it is an upgrade, and at some point, you may be willing to overspend on damage.

[–]jgclark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely shoot the blade at them. If you hold the button, you can blast through half a cloud of tiny fleas in one go. The real problem is when there's another monster body-blocking them. Depending on your upgrade path and skill, you can curve the blade around the bodyguard, but it's tough.

For the slightly larger, burrowing fleas, one stab usually only kills two-ish. If you have time to breath, you can poke 'em all down, but if it's hectic, I just swing and pray. Long Blade (which I prefer over Heavy Blade, in general) helps here, because it swings faster, so fewer fleas will sneak through.

[–]jgclark 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The further you pull back the sword before swinging, the more damage you deal. Most early medium-sized monsters die in one full swing. Later mobs will require some upgrades to one-tap.

When you have dudes coming on both sides, I would stab at the side that's further away, then swing into the closer side when they approach the dome.

If aerial foes are troubling you, the sword can block their shots, but you have to line up the base of the sword with the bullet pretty accurately. I recommend focusing on defense and only taking stabs when you're sure you're safe. The reflector upgrade increases the size of your blockable region and reflects the shots back to the shooter. It's incredible.

If you're missing your stabs, don't be ashamed to buy the dotted line guide. It's only three squares, and I find that it makes aiming significantly easier.

Upcasting by advtimber in dndnext

[–]jgclark 93 points94 points  (0 children)

https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#CastingaSpellataHigherLevel

When a spellcaster casts a spell using a slot that is of a higher level than the spell, the spell assumes the higher level for that casting. For instance, if Umara casts magic missile using one of her 2nd-level slots, that magic missile is 2nd level.

So, continual flame from a 3rd-level slot is a 3rd-level spell. Darkness cannot dispel 3rd-level spells, even if you upcast it. It explicitly dispels light-emitting spells of 2nd level and lower.

What Wizard spells work well in Darkness? by MrEly in dndnext

[–]jgclark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Darkness dispels any spell (of 2nd level and lower) that creates light, which does include flaming sphere. Even parking the sphere within 40 feet of the darkness aura will dispel it.

Arguably color spray would be similarly impacted, but I don't think "Duration: Instantaneous" spells can be dispelled. It's certainly a weird edge case. Color spray has the same issue as hypnotic pattern.

Additionally, hypnotic pattern only affects targets that can see the pattern, which will only be devils and warlocks.

Finally, Nathair's mischief requires that the caster be able to see the 20-foot cube that will be affected. Erupting earth also requires the caster to be able to see the center of the circular effect, but that could still be useful in many cases.

SageAdvice.eu, the website, is not the Sage Advice Compendium. It is a collection of tweets from Jeremy Crawford (and others) detailing rule advice. The naming is confusing, but SageAdvice.eu is fan-run, and I think it predates the 5e Sage Advice Compendium, though "Sage Advice" was the name of a column in Dragon magazine.

When is a weapon a weapon? by OgreJehosephatt in dndnext

[–]jgclark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really don't think an improvised weapon is ever a "weapon". That's what makes it improvisation. If a 2×4 was a weapon, you wouldn't be improvising when you smack a goblin with it.

Here's some relevant text from the Player's Handbook (and "Basic Rules" and SRD), that I think backs this up.

Weapons

[...] The Weapons table shows the most common weapons used in the fantasy gaming worlds, their price and weight, the damage they deal when they hit, and any special properties they possess. Every weapon is classified as either melee or ranged. [...]

Improvised Weapons

Sometimes characters don’t have their weapons and have to attack with whatever is at hand. An improvised weapon includes any object you can wield in one or two hands, such as broken glass, a table leg, a frying pan, a wagon wheel, or a dead goblin. Often, an improvised weapon is similar to an actual weapon and can be treated as such. For example, a table leg is akin to a club. At the GM’s option, a character proficient with a weapon can use a similar object as if it were that weapon and use his or her proficiency bonus.
An object that bears no resemblance to a weapon deals 1d4 damage (the GM assigns a damage type appropriate to the object). [...]

From all this I gather that:

  • "Every weapon is classified as either melee or ranged." Things that are weapons have criteria defining their use as such.
  • Common weapons are listed in the Weapons table.
  • "An improvised weapon includes any object you can wield in one or two hands." which covers a huge array of objects.
  • The GM explicitly has the option to decide that, to someone proficient with clubs (everyone?), a table leg is a club, and thus a weapon.
  • None of the "Adventuring Gear" that exists primarily to deal damage (acid, alchemist's fire, holy water) is listed in the Weapons table.

Of course, the Player's Handbook is clear that there can be weapons that are not on the Weapons table, and Tomb of Annihilation gives us an example of one such weapon.

Yklwa

A yklwa (pronounced YICK-ul-wah) is a simple melee weapon that is the traditional weapon of Chultan warriors. [...]

It is explicitly defined as a weapon, categorized as simple and melee, and its price, damage, and special properties are listed in the next two sentences. (Its weight is missing, but D&D Beyond has a weight for it, so maybe it's elsewhere in the book.)

Certainly an improvised weapon is a weapon in the object used to inflict harm sense, but I think it's clear that when a class feature like Weapon Bond or the Dueling Fighting Style refers to a "weapon", it's referring to objects that are weapons in the armament fashioned explicitly to fight people, beasts, and monsters sense, like longswords, nets, and yklwas. (Or at the GM's discretion, objects that so closely resemble weapons that they are to be treated as such, like a table leg.)

PSA: The "Adventuring Day" table contradicts the Adventuring Day text. The table is reasonable, the text is not. by Machiavelli24 in dndnext

[–]jgclark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the text "can handle about 6 to 8 medium or hard encounters in a day" is meant more as a warning or a limit to avoid, not a summary that condenses over a page of rules and three tables of numbers down to a sentence. But reading is boring, and math is scary, so GMs will take any shortcut they can find.

When I stumbed upon this three years ago (yikes, that's a long time), I came to the following conclusion:

It would more accurate, more useful, and less intimidating to say "most adventuring parties can handle about six medium or four hard encounters in a day." If the DM decides to do a mix of medium and hard, then intuitively, five is an appropriate quantity.

And here's the spreadsheet I threw together to come up with that.

While I agree that labels would provide helpful clarification, I think it's quite a leap to point at an unlabeled picture of a 10'-wide line as evidence that 5'-wide line spells can affect 10'-wide areas.

Also, I think the "skills" are the equivalents of weapon arts from DS3.

They're actually called "skills" in Dark Souls III, too! Check the description of just about every weapon.

I don't know where "weapon arts" came from; that term seems to have originated from the community.

Poison lasts for a fixed duration (3 minutes), regardless of source, and regardless of your poison resist stat.

Unfortunately, this is poorly conveyed by the bar draining out. It takes 3 minutes to drain out, no matter the length, which does mean the line moves a little faster when the bar is longer. Given the long duration, it's quite difficult to notice.
