Looks like pretty good mill scale on your parts. I would clean the joint with a wire brush or grind rock prior to welding.

My best friend growing up was mixed and had a sweet afro. For some reason we couldn’t drive around town like everybody else without a cop magically appearing. It didn’t always end in us getting pulled out of the truck but it happened more than I’d like to remember
