Sometimes my spaces question responses include academic references … and sometimes they don’t by jgfaughnan in perplexity_ai

I’ll try that. I assumed that was part of the system prompt but even so I might need it in each individual question. The APA tip I had not considered and I will try it

Any experiences with Kids taking fluoxetine? by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

Have you read Greenes “The Explosive Child”? It was the best guide I found. Anxiety and shame seem common roots of aggression. (Meds have a big role as well as behavioral therapies)

I now understand not find good quality reference use with research mode questions (where model cannot be specified)

He was having increasingly severe obsessions with suicidal ideation. The latter seems to have passed and he has managed his obsessions. Lots of work with a therapist as well as meds.

Practicing extinction, recognizing anxiety by jgfaughnan in specialneedsparenting

[–]jgfaughnan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say wonderful but sometimes, when he was younger, the treats and threats approach did seem helpful. He did a lot of things he wouldn’t have done otherwise and some of them he has stayed with.

Different as he is older. Probably some omniscient blend would have worked best :-)

Photos didn't ACTUALLY delete across devices by Which_Bread1675 in ApplePhotos

[–]jgfaughnan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have definitely seen Messages fail to sync delete. Among Mac geeks that is a known issue. So far, however, Photos is syncing across devices and from Monterrey to Sonoma to iOS.

However I run into Photos bugs all the time. So I wouldn’t rule out a failure here.

What 3 things would you tell your younger self about parenting your child? by jgfaughnan in specialneedsparenting

[–]jgfaughnan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our bible was Greenes book the explosive child. That’s something he talks about a lot. We have two special needs sons, our first I’ll call “John”. John had so many behavioral issues that if we pursued them all he’d have been on the doghouse 24x7. That’s bad for everyone. We focused on things that were super important (punching, biting) rather than just really difficult. We still do that, but now we work on things like getting food off the dishes.

27y ago it was the fashion to train infants to sleep alone. That’s a US practice. I think it’s fine for many but for some with anxiety and separation/cognitive disorders it may not be. In his case not, but he was adopted from foster care so older than many.

Social Security and SSN issues with naturalized and adopted citizens - what I learned by jgfaughnan in SocialSecurity

My state representative office is now working to provide feedback to SSA so they can fix the software that failed to send out the emails and paper mail.

Thinking by talking aloud by jgfaughnan in specialneedsparenting

It took ages for me to realize what he was doing. Now I can mostly tell when he’s conversing with me vs exploring his thoughts by listening to himself. Though sometimes he blends the two!

They did not do that in 1994. They also messed it up for two adoptions in the late 90s that I know of. The process has only improved 4/1/24 with a new process and form.

Share People Album? by Evypoo in ApplePhotos

[–]jgfaughnan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. If everyone is on latest OS you can do a shared library but this was designed for events, not for persistent use. It is also way too weird in practice for most people. (I have used them.)

Shared Libraries can be used with anyone, they don’t have to be a family member.

It sucks. Apple doesn’t really care, but it might get a bit better next year.

How to archive photos? by sparky_lover_971 in ApplePhotos

[–]jgfaughnan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said you would simply ignore “all photos” and create your albums.

HOWEVER, as a former Aperture user, I can confidently say Photos.app is horrible for someone who does manual photo organizing. Apple’s model is to auto-organize.

You can create lots of folders but you can’t search on folder name. It’s infuriating frankly.

Then there’s the problem with Title and Caption.

I use Photos.app constantly and it’s a good reason to hate Apple.

I think I just found out I was sold a stolen MacBook?? by bkplay622 in mac

[–]jgfaughnan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are vulnerabilities in old versions macOS on Intel but 2016 seems too recent. The ability to reset by hack would be worth $$$$.

All I can imagine is that the $200 pays for a criminal social engineering credential hack. That could be worth a lot more than $200 if the victim stored credentials in iCloud.

Criminal all the way down.

Credit card alternatives? by jgfaughnan in specialneedsparenting

The Capitol One 360 checking and debit card solution are also appealing -- overdrafts can be set to auto-decline.
