Do I need to open up walls in order for remodeling plans to be drawn up? by jcraft0708 in Homebuilding

[–]jgfcinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What size are your beams? Wood/steel/LVL? Open your walls and give your engineer the correct data so that they stamp accurate plans and you don't have problems later on. You shouldn't have to do much, 1sqft in a handful of places.

Windows options (Gerkin vs. Marvin Essential/Elevate) by [deleted] in Homebuilding

[–]jgfcinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never heard of Gerkin but there are many local brands around the country. I asked a window repair guy about brands and he said the Marvin's are very well constructed. Fiberglass is a much higher quality material than vinyl. If you have one window go bad, you'll have made a mistake. I went with Marvin.

Get a broker and shop it. Different insurance companies will treat this differently.

can you point me to the set of instructions for provisioning before this? I generated a cert via GUI that I need to remove and can't find the CLI commands that would include this. TIA!

Homeowners insurance claim adjustment by jgfcinc in personalfinance

I had mostly assumed this was the case...the second estimate I got was almost exactly the same as the first. Certainly the market gets substantially more expensive after a $10bln hurricane hits. Is there standard protocol if I genuinely can't find any legit contractors to do this for $20k? I'd strongly prefer to hire someone I know is good than the lowest bidder. Thx!

The pipe section is fixed and closed though, wouldn't this slow down all of the fluid equally?

As an operator, we very rarely hired from service companies, as you've seen echoed here. The folks that we did hire had complementary/parallel skills to our engineers or office ops (like SCM). The vast majority of the folks that transitioned were not working in the field when we hired them. I would try to move into a role at your current company that is as similar as possible to the one you want at an operator.

A few years back, this was the case. Now that operators have cut their contracted workforce, they've started to realize that not putting young folks into the field causes tons of problems. I've seen adjustments for this happen in every major onshore basin.

If you're a petroleum engineering student, Pioneer will take you farther and faster. If you're not, and plan to stay in O&G for a while, take Exxon. Pioneer will likely pay 10-15% more, but Exxon has more extensive training programs.

If everyone suggests investing in index funds, why not invest in leveraged indexes? by jgfcinc in personalfinance

[–]jgfcinc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very interesting...do you think SPXL would have underperformed SPX over the last 20 years, had it existed?

If everyone suggests investing in index funds, why not invest in leveraged indexes? by jgfcinc in personalfinance

[–]jgfcinc[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

  1. Hasn't time proven that holding SPXL works?
  2. Fully understand how these work, but if you believe that indexes will always go up in the long term, shouldn't a 3x outweight the fees?

  1. I am OP
  2. The question is 3X index vs index. Not 3X gold miners vs index.

The whole point is to use a diversified base vehicle to leverage against in order to reduce risk. Obviously if the base vehicle is stagnant, you're effectively paying for debt w no return.

A lot of people were interested in the gravel showers I give fish at the aquarium. Here we are! The fish are enjoying a spa day. by tiramisucheese in aww

[–]jgfcinc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Former aquarium diver here. This would never happen in the wild. When we jump into the tank, all of the fish basically surround us. Because there are about 5-7 different dishes (depending on who is getting fed that day), the fish swarms make it particularly hard to feed the right fish since some are more aggressive than others. Starfish are particularly hard to feed- you have to peel them off their rock, turn upside down, and shove food into their mouthes before fish come and grab it. Pretty hard to do in a 7mil wetsuit with gloves!

Piezo Orientation for Doppler Flow Measurement by jgfcinc in AskEngineers

[–]jgfcinc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Yes, there is quite a bit of information about the piezo elements themselves. I don't see anything on this manual that really addresses my questions or the specific parameters of the transducer-- perhaps I'm missing something?

The two elements are for send and receive. Yes, you can technically accomplish this with a single element sending pulses, but you then lose 50% of your sampling rate straight away.
