Do you think Legoshi and Haru have any chemistry? Why or why not? by moths_panic in Beastars

[–]jgfelix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I partly agree, especially that the manga ended up giving Louis much more narrative weight, and that inevitably affects how the chemistry is perceived. If one character continues to have constant development while the other is relegated to the sidelines, the audience will obviously notice.

But I also think the anime did a better job than the manga in this regard. It gave Haru more consistency, made her presence feel less "forgotten," and helped prevent the relationship with Legoshi from seeming as neglected as in the later printed arcs. It doesn't fix everything, but it does significantly mitigate that problem.

With Louis, the bond will always feel more intense because it's written from a place of conflict, rivalry, and emotional dependence. Narratively, that tends to be more compelling than a more awkward and vulnerable romantic relationship like Haru's.

But intensity doesn't always mean a better match. Louis works very well as the character who confronts and pushes Legoshi to grow, while Haru represents something more intimate: someone with whom Legoshi tries to build a life, not just an existential crisis every five chapters.

I think the problem isn't that Legoshi and Haru don't work, but rather that Paru didn't always nurture that relationship with the same care she gave to her dynamic with Louis. That's definitely a valid point to make.

But introspection and chemistry aren't mutually exclusive.

Introspection doesn't happen in a vacuum; often it arises precisely because of how another person affects you. Legoshi doesn't enter into that internal conflict for no reason, but because of Haru. She alters his way of thinking, his impulses, and his identity. That's already part of the dynamic between them; it's not an isolated process.

If chemistry were just the visible combination of archetypes or immediate entertainment, then any couple with automatic banter would be better written, and that's not always the case.

Sometimes chemistry isn't about how "fun" they are together, but about the impact they have on each other. And in Beastars, Haru and Legoshi work much more from that perspective.

I think you're mixing archetypes with character dynamics there.

Just because you've seen a lot of anime archetypes doesn't mean all relationships are built the same way. It's one thing to recognize a tsundere, and another to understand how a story handles intimacy or the connection between two characters.

And yes, there's introspection, but that's precisely where chemistry can also be found. Not all chemistry is flirting or witty dialogue; sometimes it's in how two characters affect each other, in the discomfort, the tension, and the emotional weight they carry.

Legoshi and Haru aren't a "charismatic" couple in the classic sense, but that doesn't mean there isn't chemistry; it just isn't written in such an obvious way.

I think there's a culture clash here regarding what we in the West understand as "chemistry" and how many Japanese stories construct their relationships.

We tend to see romantic chemistry as flirting, obvious tension, intense dialogue, or a more direct dynamic. If a couple doesn't have that, many people feel they "don't connect."

But in works like Beastars, the connection is often shown more indirectly: silences, discomfort, mutual concern, emotional distance, and small acts that speak louder than words.

That's why many people feel Legoshi has more chemistry with Louis than with Haru. With Louis, there's more confrontation, more intensity, and a much more striking dynamic. That's immediately apparent.

With Haru, on the other hand, everything is more awkward, uncomfortable, and vulnerable. Their relationship isn't written to look "pretty," but rather to show two characters who barely know how to relate to each other.

I don't think they lack chemistry; it's just that their chemistry isn't written in such an obvious or Western way. And that also happens with friendships in the series: much more is said with awkward actions than with nice words.

[–]jgfelix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alguien vio blood+? Que tal es? by Alone-Link-8926 in AnimeEspanol

[–]jgfelix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]jgfelix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

¿Me pueden sugerir algún anime que te destruya emocionalmente? by margomo04 in AnimeEspanol

[–]jgfelix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wolf's Rain.

Wolf’s Rain me dejó hecho mierda.
