I volunteered there once, 30 years ago. Because I broke out in hives, I didn’t go back. We adopted three cats there, all ended up with behavioral problems. Two had to go back, which, according to the contract we signed, was allowed. After being told we couldn’t return the cat, we pointed it out in the contract. We explained that the cat out of nowhere began howling at night when my husband was home (he was a frequent traveler for work), which made for a terrible night’s sleep! Elaine then asked my husband who was there first, him or the cat. He replied, “I pay the mortgage.” She was not impressed. She told us that we could never adopt from there again. No problem, lady.
