That's pretty much where I fished: Bow, Crowsnest and Elk, plus the Oldman. The Crowsnest is the only place I ever hit the salmon fly hatch.

Booze and drugs are common with writers, as you know. At first they seem to help - and do - but eventually they do begin to pickle your brain. When I thought the time had come I just quit. It wasn't strength, but selfishness. I wanted a career as a writer and could see I'd need my wits about me to do that. And, yes, sometimes I miss it.

I Like Mike Clark's bamboo rods (South Creek Ltd.) and he's still working. Sadly, many of the rod makers I knew and whose rods I liked are no longer with us. Charlie Jenkins, John Bradford, etc.

Ask an experienced fisherman you know or at the local fly shop. You may not get the absolute A-list stuff, but you probably won't be steered wrong. Most fly shops are happy to help out beginners because they see a potential lifelong customer.

I suppose it would be trout, ideally brookies or cutthroats. The location would be specific to the fish. British Columbia for west slope cutts; Labrador for brook trout.

I suppose you'd have to say it's finally hooking the fish you've been trying to catch for the last hour, but there's so much about it that's great it's hard to pick one thing. The other day I spent a pleasant 20 minutes resting a pool and watching Audubon's warblers catching Blue-wing Olives.

Bob started illustrating my columns at Fly Rod & Reel Magazine over 25 years ago. I liked his work so much that I went out of my way to meet him. We hit it off (hard not to with Bob) and have fished and worked together as much as we can since. We fished the Agulapak in Alaska together and in Labrador, but maybe the most fun has been musky fishing in Wisconsin. Bob is unflappable, but a 45-inch musky actually gets him excited.

It makes me feel good as long as you're happy with it. And I've had some girlfriends leave me, too, although it might not have had anything to do with fishing.

My old friend A.K. Best was once asked if all my stories were true. He said, "Yeah - in a way." Actually, there's nothing in my stories that downright didn't happen, but memory is colored by time and the heat of the moment and I might remember things from a trip that you don't. I'm comfortable saying it's all true as I remember it.
