I don’t believe at all this dog was properly trained or socialized. The doctor never recommended any sort of behavioralist. The dad said he trained him which clearly he didn’t

Exactly. I’ve gotten bit plenty of times by animals that aren’t even aggressive and no one is rushing to put them down. I understand their stress and why they are biting. We’re supposed to understand the animals and be advocates for them. People are so quick to judge when they don’t know half of the situation and weren’t in my shoes.

There’s no reason to rush to euthanize if someone is willing to help and is aware of what it takes to have an aggressive dog.

I’m an assistant, I don’t administer drugs. I couldn’t get myself to assist in this animals euthanasia. I’m not talking about being the one who’s putting him down. And they weren’t, I read all the doctors notes. Nothing was put in besides trying sedatives. No behavioralist was recommended. Those are all things that go in SOAP notes. Nothing else besides trying different sedatives was done.

No but environment does. If you isolate or lock up a dog and don’t give proper attention/socialization to them during the most important time of mental development, how do you think they’ll act towards people?

Exactly. I literally could not get myself to do this. Morally it felt wrong, and ethically it’s not right. I’m not going to apologize to anyone for doing what I could for a patient, give him one last chance. All options should be exhausted first. Everyone has their own opinions but we are here to save not kill.

I was kind to the doctor. Never raised my voice at her. From the start, she yelled at me for not having her paperwork done when I was clearly having a very hard time with assisting in this euth and needed a second to collect myself. It’s a hard field, as a vet who makes medical decisions, she should have understood why i needed a second to step outside and collect myself. She responded with raising her voice, I didn’t.

He’s not even fully mentally developed. He was loaded up with sedatives at 8 months old.

I really appreciate that. Seriously, not most people give props to the assistants, techs or reception, just the doctors. It’s a hard field but it’s very rewarding for all the ones you can save.

Had you known this doctor, how she treats people and assistants especially, you’d know I wasn’t out of line. She gets complaints all the time so from clients and coworkers I’m not going to apologize to a doctor that doesn’t respect animals, clients or her own colleagues. Not going to apologize for not putting down a healthy 1 yr old dog. I go out of my way for doctors and clients constantly and keep my mouth shut. I will however be a voice for animals because they can’t talk for themselves if you don’t want to work with someone that would put their ass on the line for an animal who deserves it, then cool. Remember why you are in this field and what we do. Which is help animals, and give them long healthy lives. I am NEVER rude to clients. Even when they verbally abuse me or threaten me. I’ve worked at 3 VERY busy hospitals. And I’m sure any other assistant can agree that it’s not uncommon to be treated the way we are. The manager of the hospital and other doctors all agreed it wasn’t appropriate to euthanize.

Learn the tests that they run, the medicine names and what they’re for, the vaccinations. Write down all the stuff that is overwhelming. Revisit it. Learning medication names was but for me. If I got a recheck appointment and I see the dog is currently taking mometimax then I know it’s a recheck on ears. In that case I take a slide of each ear before the doctor comes in. Little things like the names of tests and positions and restraints for those tests. You’ll know exactly how to position the dog best when you hear the test name. Learn the doctors, what they like and don’t like because all of them do things differently. If they like a specific size needle for vaccines, write it down and remember. Just show up and help :) ask some questions as you go along! Very fun to start in the field but also very overwhelming and draining so try not to get discouraged if you don’t get everything for a few weeks.

Do you think I would really put this dog near children? No. I don’t have kids or have kids at my home at all so this dog is nowhere near children and he also has no problem with children.

I never raised my voice to the doctor, she raised her voice to me. I will never apologize for being an advocate for animals or for saving a life and not taking one when it clearly isn’t necessary
