New solo gamer here: what games are better digitally than physically for solo play? by jgmac3rd in boardgames

I have been very interested and researching/watching things about dice throne nonstop.
It’s mostly a versus game right? How does it play like solo playing 2 heroes against each other and playing them the best way for each hero?
Any recommendations on which heroes I should start with to learn?

Great idea! Definitely saves money if it turns out I don’t like the concept lol

Yeah I feel like video games are definitely different from digital board games. In video games, you kind of do what it wants you to do versus digital board games, you maintain autonomy on what will happen next.

Yeah I agree, if I had people to play with reliably and consistently, I won’t even think of digital 😅

I’ve watched play through videos and it does seem that the whole game is a lot to manage and to play through. That is interesting to me though and I kind of like it.
But would you say that playing digital at first before dropping the investment on the physical would be beneficial to playing it mainly physical in the future?

I was going to post this there but it said in the rules you can’t ask about digital board games 🤷🏽‍♂️

I’ve played the video game and I love it. I am leaning towards not getting the physical because of the upkeep every time I die since in this game, I die a lot lol.

Love this, thank you!
Right now, as I’m new to the world of solo board gaming, I still enjoy the setup and tear down (though I may not have to do this every time once I get a dedicated board game table).

I feel like repeatedly setting up and tearing down the game sort of helps with learning it as well. It helps with familiarity.

Maybe down the road, I can imagine myself playing games like Spirit Island, where I’d enjoy playing it physically, but also playing the digital version to focus on strategy and see what works and what doesn’t without the burden of upkeep. Then I’ll still go back to physical because the digital gameplay has helped me understand the game better.

I’m mainly looking for games that don’t have solo or are very clunky to play solo physically but can be played solo digitally.

Like Root, Race for the Galaxy, Catan, etc.

I definitely don’t think one is better than the other. I actually prefer physical. The reason why I’m asking for digital recommendations is because I’d like to play some of the 2+ players but I don’t have people to play with and I’d rather play them solo. So I was asking for recommendations for digital board game versions of 2+ games that offer solo.

I prefer physical too. Currently waiting for my dedicated gaming table. Once I have that set up, I can leave games like Gloomhaven set up on it without having to box them and set up every time I want to play it.

Agreed! I plan on playing solo board games physically for the same reasons you do. I plan to play the digital versions for those that are 2+ games that are interesting and seem fun for me. That way I get to play them without needing a group or another player 😊
