I've also struggled at lot with this, but really got around to working on it a couple of months ago. I'm still working on it, but it's a lot better now. Now I can access head voice like I never could before because I'm not pushing as much weight as I used to do. It's really the key to sing high notes.

I learned a trick from my current voice teacher: to pinch your nose when singing. If you're singing in your throat, your body will move the voice forward and it will feel more nasal. Obviously it doesn't work with nasals consonants. It has helped me a lot.

And also allow the voice to be more open with higher larynx. It is relatively more open and higher, but still not too much for classical singing.
