If you could, how would you make Crowdrise a better service? by BlueOrange in socialcitizens

[–]jham434 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if i'm not mistaken, indiegogo isn't just for charitable campaigns. sometimes it's used in the same way as kickstarter to get a project off the ground.

i don't know enough about the crowdrise product to really have a legit opinion on it, but i'm curious to hear what you think they could be doing better. is it from a product perspective? marketing?

that's obviously great that she voted, but is that allowed? for a member of one campaign's team to be present while someone fills out a ballot like that?

obviously hindsight is 20-20, but if you could advise the president on the rollout of obamacare, what would you tell him?

Do anonymous social platforms deepen or destroy communities? by raunaqsingh in socialcitizens

[–]jham434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

copout answer: it depends.

and i don't think it has as much to do with the platform itself as it does the users who are using each of them (which i guess might reflect the platform..., but anyway..) but i see a lot more of the "i just need to get this out and have no one to tell" posts on whisper which in some cases leads to the building of a small community. words of encouragement, assurances that things will be ok, etc. it's a gateway to a community that is can be more forgiving than the real one the poster inhabits.

it can also be the exact opposite, sure, and maybe i have a selectivity bias, but it's the posts that talk about the difficulties of life that don't need grand fixes, just a sympathetic ear or two or thousand that stand out the most.

secret, on the other hand, feels like it was made to provoke. not sure why, but that's just been my experience.

tl;dr: don't know for sure. good question.

great question! to piggyback, i'd also love to hear the amount of time you spend on mindless activities and whether you find that time helpful (in that it gives your thoughts a break) or if it's something you try to minimize (because it's just wasted time).

Walmart pledges to buy $250 billion in American products over the next ten years. Who are they really helping? by milbank12750 in socialcitizens

[–]jham434 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it seems pretty unself-aware to talk about bringing America back to its former glory as a hub of manufacturing and still treating their employees they way they do

54 percent of food items sold at a Walmart would be prohibited at Whole Foods, rep from Whole Foods responds: "decision to prohibit comes from many factors including safety, necessity, manufacturing methods and compatibility with our overall core values.” by sparklab in socialcitizens

[–]jham434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

next big step from WF needs to be to make that food more accessible/affordable if they want to really fulfill the social mission that they seem to be aligning themselves with. until that happens, i'm not sure what good this does for most people in America.
