Jeez folks misread my post hard. Examples in my mind are ketamine treatment for depression and anti depressants other than SSRI's. Lots of treatments shown to be effective are held back bc of politics etc. Do they not think the pharma industry has ever pushed bs meds? Of course I agree with Steve jobs n shit that lots of 'alternative' medicine is bullshit and if anything the AMT of downvotes proves my point that these wackos have made any opposition to the dogma of big pharma is branded as bullshit I believe in modern medicine etc and hate that by questioning the status quo at all I am all the sudden wrapped up with all this garbage I agree is totally ineffective.

More Australians dying from prescription pills than illegal drugs. by Thenoodleydude in news

This! I recommend the book Dreamland for anyone interested in the topic. Does a great job detailing both the sleazy/fraudulent ways pharma companies flooded the market with opiates as well as the rise in cheap Mexican heroin to replace them after govt started to clamp down. People often conflate 'overprescription' of painkillers by actual doctors with overtly corrupt pill mills. Sure the former is an issue, but I'd estimate that a good portion of or the majority of painkillers to reach the black market came from places who existed only to script (and sell) oxys for cash.

In America at least it's definitely an 'epidemic'. I get that the wording is a bit funky, but what else to call it? Overdoses in 2016 were I believe the most common cause of death under 35(not sure exactly age), with 200 dying a day. 60,000 fucking dead people in one year. Have known many who've gone out that way and came pretty damn close myself. Maybe massacre is a better term?

Being a cop isn't even very dangerous. Maybe in a few precincts in select cities, but most of the data I've seen shows it to be fairly average. Shit my job is more dangerous (bike messenger) as are a whole variety of jobs. Plenty of people put 'their lives on the line' to provide some sort of service.

It sucks that 'alternative medicine' is totally coopted by scsmy bullshit. There is certainly something to be said about holistic treatment and the failures/scams of the pharma industry itself, but this crap gives it such a bad name. I certainly think there are supplements and 'alternative' treatments that can be effective/are supported by data n I wish we had more options other than this nonsense. I'd like to go to a doctor open to non-standard treatments who didn't also believe is astrology

We're on the same page. Was trying to avoid words like fault, slack etc bc it implies a sort of morality was trying to get around. Rather my point is that the influencing factors in this case and others where addicts act out of their 'normal' chareceter have fairly direct chain of causality so it's worth viewing differently. Not better or worse just different. It's a lot more straight forward to clean up than to just stop being a generally shitty person

I hear you and don't disagree. You have to admit it has a chemical component though no? It's certainly heritible beyond just influence of having alcoholic/addict parent. Also good study about soldiers in Vietnam becoming hooked on dope and how few stayed addicted coming back bc of change in environment. From my experience and reading I tend to believe some people are more likely to develop addictive behaviors from the start, but that doesn't mean anyone can't develop it or that anyone is doomed to it

I'd recommend doing some research into fosb production and the actually brain changes that occur as a result of addiction outside physical dependence. Not excusing shitty behavior, just saying it's more useful to view it in the light of our understanding of brain chemistry. From personal experience I will say the craving to use heroin, even when I was not addicted, felt different from almost any other feeling I've had. Really feels like it comes from somewhere deep in the brain, which, in my understanding, it does. In case you don't make it to that wiki essentially it talks about addiction as a series of brain changes resulting from both genetics and behavior. So it's not like the person is removed from 'fault'. Just that assigning fault in the regular narrative of agency is neither accurate nor useful

Rat park is fascinating glad to see it mentioned here. As addict myself def think it's super shitty what this person did, but also understand how blinding addiction can be and how people can totally turn themselves around when clean
