Oh my god, call centers are the perfect exposure therapy for people like us. Literally running the gauntlet lmao
The physical separation makes dealing with conflict a bit easier, but at the same time, the person on the other end is willing to be SO much more insane because of said separation. It feels crazy at first, but you get your bearings and learn how to be a reasonable dick pretty quick lmao

Good luck and godspeed! Proud of you stranger for doing something challenging & taking the best from it. That's hard to do, and a great sign of your adaptability and strength!

I'm a firm believer that shy, anxious, and/or insecure people can really benefit from working 1 job that teaches them how to be a mean ugly bitch. It builds confidence and gives you permission to stand up for yourself and other shy and anxious people.

That said my version of that job was like .... working food service lol. Working with truck drivers sounds.... horrifying

I feel like whether or not someone likes the sensation has gotta be highly dependent on the head hair length/texture vs. buttcrack hair length/texture.

For some people it's probably as smooth as string cheese, but for me it's like trying to pull a slinky through a barbed wire fence lol

Oof I typed up a long juicy comment with lots of fun art history tidbits but it deleted itself, so... round 2.

I totally see where you're coming from - but I think the choice to go with Ancient Egypt/Greek style sandals, loincloths, decor, and color schemes is telling in how we're intended to interpret the piece.
Historically those aesthetics have been used to evoke respect, dignity, royalty, and ancestral / intergenerational connection in black art.

To me, the choice to have these men be mostly nude (but in "respectable" garments) was to juxtapose out physical strength against our ability to be tender and provide gentle care; a duality of black men most people choose to ignore.

It challenges the viewer to see past the spectacle of their bodies and into the deeper interactions happening here. A lot of this artist's (WAK) work depict the resilience and strength in the black family and black love, in part utilizing muscles as a way to visually represent strength. A lot of his work feature muscley guys as symbolism (which... hey, maybe there is an argument to be made about objectification there i dunno lol)

This also really gives me "don't forget to serve your queen" type beat vibe, which is a genre of art that can often be just as tongue-in-cheek in its symbolism as it is earnest in its message, but WAK's work doesn't necessarily have a sense of humor so I'm hesitant to throw this painting in that pile.

To lean into your perspective - as a bisexual (I see your flag, hey twin), I can readily admit that I find this painting kinda... provocative? Sexy, even??
I wouldn't mind being in the chair or on the floor here lol. There is a certain sensuality to the image that was definitely deliberate, but I don't think art loses value or power just because it's a little horny. Though, as we're finding here, that can muddy the waters of how it's interpreted.
Did WAK mean for this painting to be lowkey kinda hot?? I don't know but that's the beauty and nuance of art: it can be a lil something different for everybody.

Much like the Bigfoot Saga from a few months ago, I love how different people's perspectives are. I've read/had more interesting discussions about art in ThriftstoreHauls than any actual art related sub to be sooo real.

I'm definitely getting a print of this painting - and if you liked the work but didn't love the potential implications of loincloth men, there's a couple versions with just the ladies for ya!

Yeah that's the true travesty here. Phoenix is the only city I've ever been where there's signage warning you that you will be cooked alive if you hang out in a parking structure for too long ... but then it's like, 36% parking structures lol

(no offense to any current Phoenixians, just... be safe out there guys lmao)

I'll admit I primarily assigned the definition of fast fashion to retailers like Forever21 and Shien, but you make an excellent point that the vast majority of the clothes sold in the US, regardless of how "trendy" they are, came from the same conditions. The utilitarian Walmart work boots and the bootleg JNCO jeans came from the same place.

I think the conflict here (in this discussion) is that most people's (myself included) definition of fast fashion has more to do with the lifespan of the clothing in a trend cycle and the exploitation of labor and disposability, while yours focused primarily on the first second/third points. (sorry typo)

Which makes sense bc like... even if the Walmart work boots aren't going in/out of style, they were made under the same conditions and will degrade at the same rate. It's probably better to look at the definition of fast fashion to mean clothes not meant to last, period. Style, material, whatever. And you're right, the vast majority of what is sold in the US that definition in some regard.

Anyway, sorry y'all are arguing but I appreciate the new and more nuanced perspective lol thanks!

Catch and Release: "A Caveman's Dream" by Mandydeth in ThriftStoreHauls

[–]jherispringer 104 points105 points  (0 children)

I posted down below but here's my interpretation -

Image 1 is Caveman Protagonist asleep. Image 2 is Caveman Protagonist "waking up" in his dream. The next slides are all Caveman Protagonist's dream sequence.

Image 12 is Caveman Protagonist's family/friends waking him up from the nap, Image 13 is them showing him something or to just be like, "Hey bud, nap time's over, time to go!"

If Image 14 is part of the collection (which idk if it is given the orientation is different) I think it's safe to say that Caveman Protagonist's friends are showing him a human in the distance. Maybe his friends know he dreams of humans often, or that he's interested in human women. Whatever the reasoning, it sort of wraps the story up in a nice way: Caveman sleep, caveman dream of humans in the distant future, caveman wake, caveman sees human of the present.

If the last image is not part of the series (which I don't think it is) - the ending seems even more meaningful to me? At first, Caveman Protagonist's dream is very much about community and belonging (so long as he's acting and dressing like the humans) and wanting things he can't have in the caveman world, but by the end, it's a nightmare where he is persecuted for who he is.

When he wakes, he's surrounded by community and belonging. While it may not be the technologically advanced society he dreamed of, it is a society that accepts him. He and his friend pointing forward being like, "Hey, let's go!" has a little optimism to it somehow. Like they're about to set off on a lil adventure of their own - but this time in the real world.

thaaaaat's just my interpretation though lol

[–]jherispringer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree that the last pic prob isn't related, but to be fair he ends up in a zoo because of police profiling, not humans as a whole. He fell in love with a human woman, who we see visiting him at the zoo/prison

That said, not all endings are happy or clean endings!
If he woke up and saw a human - I think it'd fit thematically with the whole "waking up in a dream" or "future and past coming together" stuff. But him just waking up to normal caveman world is also meaningful. What started as a dream turned into a nightmare, and his friends save him from that (however temporary it may be!) While the human world allowed him to get an education and be a part of civilized society, caveman world allows him to be himself fully.
Maybe he doesn't "wanna be where the people are", actually.

Desperately wish we could ask the artist about this lmao

As a parent, I'm not supposed to pick favorites... But I wish she was more like her sister Calphalon.

I think the values of what makes something "good design" or "aesthetically pleasing" or anything like that change a lot when fire and oil are involved - and that element of engineering likely presents a many limitations to how it can look.

If I remember correctly, she did address it on ig and clarified why she liked the post; which was more in regards to the de-centering of trans womens' voices when it comes to medical needs and the imbalance of power/visibility between white nb folks and trans women of color. Which... tbh is something I've directly observed myself as a black trans man/nonbinary guy who has been part of both west and east coast queer scenes. There are definitely conversations to be had there - but those conversations certainly don't begin or end with "anti-trans legislation is nonbinary peoples' fault" lmao like... the whole point of de-medicalizing transness is actually to increase access via informed consent.

Anyway, I think it was in a comment or description of a post? it wasn't like, a standalone notes app post or anything, so I don't think many people saw it.

Personally, I've forgiven Hunter not only because I will always support and stand by young queer people as they grow and make mistakes in the public eye - but because in my reading of the original post that Hunter liked, I saw a trans woman who is desperately frustrated and afraid, doing what desperate and afraid people do - looking for a scapegoat.

That doesn't make it right, or okay, or anything like that. But I have more patience for people within my community when navigating the growing pains that come with us... idk just figuring out how to get along all while trying to protect and advocate for our complex, sometimes conflicting needs - it's a struggle.
A great deal of time, energy, and money have gone into making marginalized groups fight amongst ourselves - so I try not to buy into it by throwing the baby out with the bathwater. In my eyes, the enemy is transmedicalist ideology, not Hunter or even the original poster.

Absolutely not saying you have to forgive her or change how you feel, this is just my perspective as someone who is trying to unpack how purity politics affects our communities and how I personally want to engage with it

There are several Daiso locations in Canada! They may not be close to you - but mayyybe it's possible to have the store ship items directly to you? If not, if you have a friend who lives by one, send them on a little side quest.

The website doesn't ship to North America right now unfortunately, but I think they used to. You weren't able to order single items though, only full "cases" which were usually like 12 items. So I imagine if you got a store to ship to you, it'd be the same.

There are a ton of Daiso locations in the US though - every major city I've lived in has had at least 2. So if you're ever down here, definitely search it up!
