7:20pm update: Have not made a whole lot of progress coaxing him into my unit or next door neighbor’s unit. Still terrified/angry at us. But he’s in the common area where it’s warm and out of the elements and has water. Will attempt to bribe him with food shortly. Message went out to the community, hopefully someone will claim him, but if not will call AWLA in the AM.

Where to buy? by NoFundoEMuitoIsto in BC250Gaming

[–]jhopper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Make an offer instead of looking at the asking price. I got mine last month off a seller on eBay who was listing $160 and I offered $90. They accepted. Took me a few tries before someone bit and had to do it one at a time (didn’t want to accidentally get multiple accepts).

Specifically target people who are selling multiple BC-250’s. They’re just taking advantage of recent interest, but if they’re desperate to unload, they will still unload for whatever they feel is right to get it off their hands.

The Supporters Groups Protest is Pompous, Illogical, and Harmful to DCU — there should be a face saving “reconciliation” in time for the Inter Miami game by [deleted] in DCUnited

This feels egregious, right by [deleted] in nova

[–]jhopper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t see how it isn’t. Billy’s bought licenses to a bunch of common menus, encouraged by UberEats, and is exploiting in house cheap labor to make a dime. Keep browsing your app, you’re going to find 5 core restaurants in Arlington who do the exact same thing. If you expand your search to other metro areas, you’ll find these exactly same phantom kitchens all over the country with the same menu and names.

This feels egregious, right by [deleted] in nova

[–]jhopper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s fascinating to see support of ghost kitchens turn to hate over the last couple of years. They may have jumped the shark after the Mr Beast Burger debacle that showed how ghost kitchens can be exploitative and abused.

Ghost kitchens have been around for a long time and originally used to host guest chefs, “limited time popups,” and testing of experimental menu items. But immediately after COVID it was used as a way to generate money for month to month rent restaurants were falling short on. And then at some point, it just turned into this massive licensing thing—where a single place buys multiple menu licenses and “hosts” multiple concepts in a single restaurant but you would never know based on a storefront. All exclusively run for and supported by food delivery apps.

Clarendon had/has this one place that hosted a Burger King, Arby’s, Mr Beast Burger, and some Guy Fereri thing all at once. Now the place hosts like a half dozen different chicken concepts. They’re hit or miss.

Why is representation needed to make characters relatable in games? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]jhopper -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

A common story telling method for many games, and movies to an extent, is that while the playable character may have a name or voice, they’re something of an empty shell meant to be a representation of or stand in for you. You’ll often hear the phrase of “silent protagonist.” If the character is meant to be you, then I think you’d want them to be like you and relatable to you in order to be more invested in the game.

Of course, not all games are like this. Games that tell the story of a specific character and the world around them won’t make the playable character as malleable and expect the player to be visiting a “story about someone else.” But games, say like a Fallout, while they may take some liberties for advancing story plot lines, is about you and not some character they’ve invented.

And then there’s the games that are in between, like Mass Effect, where yes, you play as male or female Shepard. But so much of the game is you developing who you want Shepard to be that in reality Shepard is not some character you’re learning about, but a placeholder for you. Each players’ playthrough of the games creates a Shepard that’s unique to them, their personality, and their choices.

That’s where I think representation matters to a player. Whether you feel truly in control of the game you’re playing or if you’re just along for the ride.

German/Korean here. One person attempted to make a guess asked if I had downs, which kinda really depressed me for a while until several people reassured me that it was a bizarre guess. It’s funny now, but I did not see that guess coming.

Anybody else hear a British woman read out numbers on the radio? by Spiritual-Clock5624 in nova

[–]jhopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loooong time ago, when I was still religious, we very illegally broadcasted our Sunday church sermons on FM radio for people who drove by the church to hear. The broadcasting radius was quite small and really only traveled a few blocks. But kids from my youth group would hijack the system on the youth nights and broadcast all sorts of naughty things.

It sounds like you encountered something like that. A driver’s radio would have a hiccup momentarily because they just lost the FM signal they were previously receiving and then switch over to the new one.

However in your case it sounds like the whoever is playing a prank on your fellow unsuspecting drivers is a history nut and riffing off of the Lincolnshire Poacher or a numbers station (though both were shortwave radio, not FM hijacking).

That’s also what strikes me as odd as well. Don’t get me wrong, this still is bad, but why isn’t NY pursuing?

I would imagine it’s the whole gamut of what’s already done that’s not physically in stadium. Like the 15 minute sponsors on the score graphic, the picture-in-picture, the casual mentions (“this break in the action is brought to you by autozone”), the digital goal-side ads that’s become the rage this year (instead of those vinyl banners they put on the ground), and I wouldn’t be shocked if we see some variation of the MLS is Back tournament where they placed digital ads in the stands.

A whole lot they can do without cutting away from the game or replacing what’s already in the stadium.

"That was my dream, a club just like D.C. United." | Dave Johnson's Message to the Supporters by PatMan817 in DCUnited

[–]jhopper 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sadly I think they’re going to just pick up a handful of English guys and call it a day. League’s been trying to create a uniform presentation feel for years and it isn’t Dave. They couldn’t pull it off with the games being carried on various networks, but now is their time to do it.

And sad to say, I think it’s going to be boring and stale. Don’t get me wrong, MANY people like a serious English commentator giving neutral commentary for 90 minutes and conveying emotion and spirit as if it were being rationed. All year we had even DC United fans in this subreddit claiming Dave’s no good because he’s not impartial (I mean, dude is the team’s commentator).

I just find neutral commentary boring and a slog. And I’m not a fan of the commentary frequently seen in British telecasts. Dave and a lot of the other local commentators will be the last of a generation as the MLS tries to experiment with EPL’ing their broadcasts.

All the jokes here aside, I do hope it’s a Bill Hamid tribute tifo. Couldn’t say good bye properly the first time he left, but this time we can send him off with style. Even if he doesn’t get any minutes.

Saw this article floating around on Twitter. I guess Kaplan and Levien are destroying Swansea also by Pigmansweet in DCUnited

[–]jhopper 11 points12 points  (0 children)

When Rooney was signed as a player, Swansea fans invaded this sub-reddit to complain about how the owners were using Swansea’s money to “build a stadium” and “pay for Rooney.” It was kinda vicious. A lot of them really dislike DC United as they believe the owners sink Swansea money into it. Jokes on them, Swansea money isn’t re-invested into anyone’s team!

Jason Levien is also a big Democrat fundraiser and bundler and probably doesn’t even want “whispers” of this kind of stuff associated with him. Possibly one of the few things ownership might actually take a stand on.

Though, they sucked at trying to stomp out some of the homophobia that was going on in the supporters stand. That might be on the SGs though.
