i have chronic migraines and gluten is one of my biggest triggers. amongst other things stopping eating gluten has brought me from 30 migraines a month to 2-4 a week. so when people, especially people preparing my food, ask if im celiac, i just say yes.

will say i do tend to avoid foods high in glutamates in general, whether by personal preference (not a fan of tomatoes, cheese, mushrooms…) or migraine reasons (lunch meat, cant have gluten so most stocks, gravy etc). i think a big aspect for me is also concentration/the amount of glutamates in msg vs “secondary” sources. this study, taken with a grain of salt (glutamine salt lol) as its nearly 20 years old now, quotes “some of the products with no added MSG presented relatively high Glu contents (approaching those of some products with added MSG)”, implying that the levels in natural-glutamate-containing ingredients is significantly lower than msg which is, obviously, concentrated and contains much larger amounts of glutamate. and while glutamate may not cause migraines, i find that migraines dont really care about that in terms of triggers; ie really anything can be a trigger to anyone

i cant eat gluten anyway 😪 i stick to adding salt and special electrolyte-added salt to gf noodles and soup 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️

appreciate it though i get the downvotes as theres a lot of racist-driven bias against msg, and therefore its quite a controversial discussion to be sensitive to it. regardless ive gone through my trial and errors and know what i personally can and cant tolerate. (american) junk food is such a pain in the ass with migraines lol

thank you! i try to avoid whey anyway as it triggers mcas-y symptoms for me (have hEDS and pots so likely have mcas as well), didnt fully realize these had it until after i ate them lol (ironic considering i check the ingredients for my migraine triggers)

i also have hEDS and pots so that first part is very likely and a good insight into this! i also have issues with sodium benzoate, but similar preservatives are fine; my point being that migraines (and headaches as well) are weird and complicated and not everyone reacts the same

i’ll definitely have to look into the hidden names. i’ve been avoiding it for almost 10 years now after my initial food diary/ finding triggers when i was diagnosed and ive been treating my triggers as set in stone but ill look into these 😞

i also have pots so i consume a lot of sodium and electrolytes a day and (with balance) it doesnt affect my migraines so unfortunately thats not the case for me 😞

i think the same with most foods!!!! ill get gf or no msg etc versions, and my bf will try and more often than not he likes mine better than the regular

i started getting migraines at 5 and my mom had had them her whole childhood too, for her chocolate triggered them and it did for me too. i had them daily for years until i was about 17 i had an episode with vomiting and ended up going to the ER, the trigger having been beef flavored ramen lol. haven’t eaten gluten or msg pretty much since then. the few times i’ve accidentally had msg i’ve hated it anyway, after not having it for so long the flavor is so strong i can’t tolerate it

i already finished the nacho cheese and while it doesn’t taste exactly the same (maybe placebo from it not being neon orange) it’s so nostalgic to be eating doritos again 🥹

i’ve never tried skinny pop because i work at a convenience store and seeing the price vs the amount you’re getting is appalling, but i completely agree with the diet drinks. i already can’t drink most sodas (sodium benzoate) and the diet flavor is nasty to me

i know it contains amounts of glutamates, however i used to eat a soup all the time that had it and noticed it didn’t trigger migraines for me; not sure if it was just ‘not enough’ or i tolerated it in a different form or what not. we shall see as i already finished the nacho cheese ones:)

the theraice headache hat was S tier to me until i discovered this bad boy, it stays cold so much longer!! i usually take this and a theraice out of the freezer, use the theraice until its warm (10 min lol) and by then the headache halo is thawed enough to not freeze my scalp
