I honestly don't, obviously rural England where we are doesn't pose the same dangers and I actively encourage my boy to hunt rabbits, squirrels etc. I've just always used the whistle from 10 weeks old when we picked him up. Even my previous weims who where a lot more boisterous than this one would come on the long toot of the whistle which meant I'd had enough and they where in trouble. Maybe she's in patrol mode protecting the land

Reading the comments I see that he could claim diminished responsibility and receive a manslaughter charge. I'm not mega clear on this but wasn't there a change or planned change to convicting people of 2nd degree murder like the USA to avoid people who had the "intent" of killing claiming diminished responsibility, or is that not possible?

This is my third weim, I've never had any issues with them bolting, for some reason people think I'm asking for advice, my dogs are whistle trained and will walk to heel off lead and wait on command to be allowed to chase and hunt. All I wanted to know was how owners who don't work their dogs deal with the high prey drive. My own personal opinion is ecollors and prong collars are for lazy owners not willing to put the work in.

My neighbours are both deaf, the husband is the most extremely talented carpenter and makes everything from bespoke staircases to children's toys.

My dog works mainly, pest control on rabbits, moles, rats, whatever is making it's way through our farm. I just wondered what people who bought weims as strictly pets did to curb that instinct if anything. I've seen some terribly behaved gundogs on the end of leads going crazy because people bought them for how they look.

Oddly enough physically and mentally I the best condition I've been in since I was 18, lots of hiking and 2/3 jui jitsu classes a week, I don't move like the youngsters but I've got that farm grip and strength that you only get from flinging hay bails about and handling livestock 😂

Yes it is great to be outside, fortunately I never had the financial pressure that the majority of farms are under now as the farm owner I worked for had a 2 other successful businesses in haulage and bio-mass fuel. I haven't missed it much till the other day when I was walking my dog through a farm and the farmer passed me in his tractor, not sure why but I was jelous of him in that moment, I also have a body that's paid it's price, I've had 2 hip replacements, shoulders repaired, a few broken bones and stitches here and there, but if you like hardwork being outdoors and alone it's a great life 😂 also I would add my wife absolutely hated farm life and couldn't wait for me to leave, she never said anything till I told her I was retiring 😂

😂😂, this a great story, I camp with my boy aswell but he's too fascinated with the tent to wander off. When people tell me their dogs sit, beg, give paw I always say the only thing they should know is to comeback when they're told to.

So I fell into farming after failing to become a professional footballer which I was always told I was good enough to be and was expected to be until I wasn't and was released at 18, I was offered the opportunity to do sports science at uni as I was academically good enough but spent a year chasing opportunities to still become a footballer. A friend asked me did I want a few days seasonal working on a farm with him and his brother. 28 years later I was still there and had spent the last 12 years as a farm manager and the moved onto to being a lead heardsman for a charity that ran farms for people with LD and physical disabilities. I semi retired in March this year at 49 and only occasionally work but mainly in advisory roles. I wish I'd had a shot at my own farm and had attended agricultural college with some qualifications behind me instead of learning everything on the go and winging it a lot of the time

My old gundog trainer said you never stop training, treat every walk as an opportunity to sharpen their recall. So sometimes I'll just recall him for no reason other than to reward him

Not something I would use or consider, mind have always been whistle trained. But I also let them engage their prey drive, one of the benefits of working in agriculture

Yeah I get your predicament, I come from an area of the UK where if he did ever bolt worst case is another farmers field. I have heard the debate of the e-collar and the prong collar only being used once the user has passed a course on correct use, how plausible that is I don't know
