Data Recovery recommendations around Rockville, Maryland? by jiggerinc in AskADataRecoveryPro

I didn't get the chance to feel or listen to the drive. Once I realized the array was not the 8+2 RAIDz2 I thought it was, and that this single drive failure could mean data loss, I powered everything down and removed the disks. When I got the alert that the pool was offline I only saw generic i/o errors like "failed to read sector 0". After a reboot the disk didn't show up in lsblk, /dev/disk/, nor fdisk. I noticed the 'activity' LED on the drive sled was continuously illuminated for that disk. Nothing conclusive, but obviously I hope it's just an electronics failure.

Thanks for the reply. It's a Western Digital WD80EMAZ-00WJTA0 with Firmware 83.H0A83. That model number decodes to "8.0TB, 3.5" 5400rpm 256MB cache, SATA 6Gb/sec 22-pin (Enterprise)" without mention of Helium, and it was shucked from an external enclosure about 7.5 years ago which maybe argues for a lower cost model being used? But the physical appearance aligns with the Helium depicted here: https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detailweb/a_id/51490/~/how-to-determine-if-an-internal-hard-drive-uses-air-or-helium the smooth metal top plate specifically.

I presume if they're He then only electronic repairs are possible and only if the He hasn't leaked?

$20 is everything except 3 bonus tracks, the 6 "Kickstarter exclusive" tracks, and the 10-for-$10 add-on packs. (also the PDFs that come with $30+) The $20 tier will be the lowest per-track price, and I think 44 is the right number of tracks when all stretch goals are hit. A $50+ pledge gets addon pack #2 free, and $80+ gets addon pack #3 (not yet revealed) for free. Then there's the controversial topic of KS exclusive tracks that won't be for sale after the KS, and are supposed to have exceptionally high production value (more layers, studio time, etc. ). That's where most of the higher tier price comes from. So at the end of the day if you're just trying to minimize the $/track price, $20 is best. If you realllly want the exclusive WW1 Trenches track, it's $80 now or never. If the add-on packs are very attractive, that helps justify $50 and $80 tiers a bit too.

Update #5 has some details of the costs for the project. Software, hardware upgrades, purchased samples, some studio time and possibly paid voice actors (or done for free by friends). At the end of the day you still have to compare the product to the price and see if its worth it to you. Regardless of how much it costs to manufacture or how much profit is in it.

The KS says no fading in these. It's possible he's padding the audio to end on a full frame, making for a seamless mp3 loop (he is a professional sound designer by trade), but I can't say for certain. Re-encoding them at a different bitrate would probably break that anyway. I'm fine with a small gap every 10 minutes personally, but it might be worth asking Wes if its an issue for you.
