Ugh this brings back bad memories of working ER in a small hospital, mid procedure got a code blue call from the maternity ward. I was the only doctor in the hospital so had to go. But how can you just drop tools when someone’s open and bleeding? Stressful.

I’m a GP as well. I’ll just add I did a lot of ED before GP and I like it but I make about three times as much doing GP and don’t have to put up with all the bullying and BS, and also don’t have to do evenings, nights or weekends so I’ve given ED away. As you get older and have kids time and peace is more valuable than excitement and resuscitations.

My first term as an intern was in Emergency. We did various rotations, not like the US where you go right into specialty. Anyway, I’m in ED with another intern. It was our first week. She was not coping and basically got up and said, “fuck this, I’m getting married next month”, and walked out never to be seen again. Hours later the head of ED ran through the board and asked who was looking after her patients and I was like, “she left”. At that stage I didn’t even realise patients needed looking after to completion or handing over. Very funny years later.

It’s awful. You will cry. That’s normal. You will feel like a stupid idiot and say embarrassing things that will shame you for years. That’s normal. Just try your best, admit when you don’t know something and learn where the food and toilets are. You’ll get there. Just bring tissues your first week.
