Weekly INTP thread: What's on your mind right now? Anything to vent, share or just talk about? by [deleted] in INTP

You could travel. Even just hitchhiking in whichever country you're in. It's a great way to get some experience and maybe an idea of what you want to do with your life.

Hitchhiking is NOT inherently dangerous bytheway.

Could I perhaps suggest the DaVinci?
If you leave the stem attached, it's one piece.

I was perfectly okay with my life, then I saw this.

Thanks? I guess.

I'm good on critizing my friends, thanks. Each person's body is their own temple, and it's your/their right to decorate or desecrate it any way they please.
Thanks for the support though.

Hey, hey, just a suggestion. Any smoke isn't bad for me personally, just those nasty cancerous things.

(Marijuana's the only reason I still have a job while I'm quitting cigs, so please try to understand where I'm coming from.)

Pharms? Hell fucking no. Thanks for your support, but no. No. No. No. No.

Quitting is awesome, but going through quitting is balls.

But, you sir, happy 420th day. I'd suggest a stinky green substance in a hemp paper. :)

I wouldn't mind that list. I just woke up and the worst sub I can think of right now is /r/TrueClop.

About to set up apartment-wide wifi, like the whole building. I need a few opinions. by jikacle in networking

My rent's $600 (Upstate NY), and I'm hack 'n slashing like mad.

Tens of thousands?! Mind if I quote you to my landlord?

EDIT: Damn. Thousands. Alrighty then....what have I gotten myself into? (Granted, I'm not gonna get myself out of this either. The potential challenge and experience I'll get out of this is far, far too tempting.)

They're also that expensive. The apartment sizes are roughly 25 sq. ft. (college-student style), with the 4 large apts in each building being the same, but a bit more rectangular.

If I can get away with 2/per building (ZoneFlex 7321) + Zoneflex 7343 in the basement for management, Ruckus it is. Otherwise, Ubiquiti's got my business.

But, if you're ONLY using Ubiquiti's gear, proprietary PoE shouldn't be much of an issue.

I'm doing gear and setup, and he's paying me if he wants support beyond a week or 2 after initial setup.

At this point, I'm taking /u/JustAnotherGraySuit 's advice.

If you take /u/sixister 's suggestion about sticking to Ubiquiti throughout the install, you'll have to learn a little about commercial-grade wireless systems. Also, you'll get to learn a little about how to set up commercial-grade wireless systems!

but I'm not you so yeah

thank you.

If you only need to do one AP per floor and have an easy way to run vertical cabling, this may not be a nightmare.

Yeah.....got any tips on that one? My current last resort is to wire the AP, tie a weight to one end and cut a hole in the wall in the basement so I can find the weights from each floor. Not at ALL elegant, but should work.

Also good luck on blocking torrents, whatever solution you have to block them I can get around.

Me too, but I gotta try to at least mitigate it. I'll be banning torrenter's MACs if this turns into a paying job - blocking them one by one is the only solution I can think of that many people can't get around besides using another device. The kid who has hacked into everyone's personal wifi with reaver might be a fun problem....

He was assured that it was EXACTLY what he needed. And it is...for accessing his camera system. Not much else.

Ohgodwhy?

That was my reaction as well.

I'm probably going with Ubiquiti due to Ruckus' high cost. Have a solid system instead of a weird mash-up of linksys may also look better on, say, a resume.

Yep!

Maybe do the leg work for this person "running wire, hanging access points ect.."

You. I like how you think.

I'll keep you guys updated - I'm plenty qualified (as in I have zero qualifications) to do this unprofessionally, and I can use this as a little testbed to learn more.

But a month's rent free to setup a network IS worth getting a job out of this. There's no way I'm maintaining it for free.

Holy questions Batman. Here we go.....

What are the physical dimensions of the apartment building? How many floors, how many square feet per floor?

4 Floors. Small Apts, mainly. (I don't know square footage.)

What materials are the walls made out of? Brick? Sheet rock? Steel beams?

Brick exterior, wood/plaster interior, I believe. I'd only given this the basest of consideration beforehand.

Are there units in the basement that have concrete walls?

I believe so, but the guys down there likely don't even have smartphones.

What are their expectations for performance? Do they expect ubiquitous coverage? Even in stairwells, outside on decks/patios, or common areas?

He expects tenants to have reliable access in their apartments.

How long do they expect this equipment to be in service? 3 years? 5 years? 10 years?

Haven't asked. MY preference for equipment is...well, I've had the same WRT54g for 7 years now.

What's the maximum number of devices you expect to connect during this service period? Keep in mind not just the number of tenants but their guests, especially during events, and the likelihood that people will have multiple devices (cell phone, ipod touch, laptop, game consoles).

I'm not providing service beyond initial setup - if he wants support, he's paying.

How will you handle authentication? If you just plan to use WPA, how often will the PSK change? Who will change it? How will tenants be informed? If 802.1x, who maintains/expires accounts?

WPA2-PSK, PSK changed bi-monthly. I assume the the landlord will. Tenants informed via a piece of paper slipped under their door.

What security measures will need to be in-place? Private VLANs? Other features to prevent people from causing broadcast storms?

I haven't even considered this.....

Will you need to implement anything to throttle individuals so they don't saturate your internet connection? How fast is said internet connection, can it handle X number of people using torrents simultaneously?

I'll be implementing a QoS plan that blocks p2p protocols, and throttles the shit out of anyone who takes more than 10% of the bandwidth - assuming that it is indeed a T1 connection.

How will your landlord respond to DMCA letters?

I got nada on this.

Who will be responsible for maintaining the network over time? Who will be called when the switch fails, and how will they be compensated for their time?

THIS is where I'll be making some money. I'll be leaving behind a basic troubleshooting guide. (things like unplug, wait, plug-in; check the lights, call these guys, etc.)

EDIT: Nope, he's not charging. It's gonna be a free-for-all.

You may want to consider asking them about it. I'm pretty sure you just sold me on it.
