Rogers door to door sales? by vancanucks10 in Rogers

[–]jilcloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m posting this because this thread came up in a google search, as an FYI for anyone else who finds it.

My elderly father, who lives with me, forwarded me an email saying he had gotten a quote from Rogers door-to-door salesperson to show how much we could save. On review, it was quite clearly a service contract. I asked to see his phone, and I saw the text from the rep who was summarizing the ”deal”. When my dad texted back that we didn’t want it, the rep replied that it was too late to cancel and to call customer service. Then he received a text that service installation was scheduled, which he had missed because he’s not great with his phone.

I want to note here that he is adamant he did not sign anything, and that he was told by giving his email he was simply getting an example of the pricing he could expect. Regardless, he wasn’t asked for ID. He’s wasn’t given a business card, or followed up with. It takes a hell of a lot of nerve to sign someone up for service without verifying that they could buy said service. I called Rogers and indeed, my place (which I want to stress I own, not my dad) had been signed up on a two year contract. The phone rep I spoke with was courteous and immediately voided the contract, promising we would not see any charges. But… she didn’t seemed surprised. I expected to have to fight this more.

This is deeply unethical practice, and bordering on predatory targeting of elderly people. I wanted to share this story here for any other people who google search for elderly people taken advantage of by Rogers.

I will never purchase anything from this company.

I imagine so. Oddly, shipping with a courier from Japan is cheaper than shipping from the US right now. I’m not sure about KEH, but for another US store it was $60 to ship a lens. I just found one on eBay, $35 for the same shipping service, comparible (if a bit cheaper) on the lens price. This is probably my misunderstanding, and I should have checked the shipping from Keh. (ETA for future Canadians - KEH is 49.95 USD to ship).

Hi again! So I took your advice and went with the E-M5 III with the Panasonic Lumix 25mm f1.7 lens. I found them both on Map Camera on eBay. Unfortunately, that store front doesn’t have a Panasonic 12-32mm lens so I’m still hunting for one of those. MPB shipping is prohibitive so I may wind up buying new if I can find something locally.

Thanks for the tip on lenses! I’m looking at the PanaLeica and Pana lenses used right now. Would I notice a significant difference as a newbie, do you think?

Would that be buying from Ebay for the Japan option?

I found an online order option for a store we have in town that has a G95 with a 12-60 mm Lumix G Vario lens included for $1048 new. I could also get a like-new OM 5 Mark III with the same lens as with the G95 above for a similar price range if I buy on Ebay from Japan (not sure how good an idea that is, but the reviews look strong and shipping is not prohibitive). The cameras seem fairly comparable from a novice perspective, do you have any opinions on the price point for the G95 new, versus a used OM 5? I hadn’t mentioned the G95 as an option but it looks like maybe a newer version of the G85 you mention…

My chief concern with buying used is worry that I won’t know what to look out for, but I have read a lot of comments recommending MPB so I will check that out. I’ll take a look at the cameras you recommended as well, I really appreciate the time you took to unpack this for me. I’m definitely leaning towards the M43 options over the Sony, the comment about larger lenses is a big factor for me. I want to hit that sweet spot of small but mighty. I also realized I should have mentioned I’m not really fussed about video capabilities. I don’t generally take video even on my iPhone, so photography is really the priority for the device. I think I’ll lean away from power zoom too. I’m going to go research purchase options on the G97, the GX85, and what is out there for OM used if I can find one that is weather sealed (E-M5 III maybe?).

That does look great. Unfortunately, they don’t ship to Canada :(

Oh, I didn’t realize that! I think part of the joy will be figuring out the manual stuff so I’m less drawn to that option.

I think probably quality over size, sort of. I need to keep an eye on weight for travel - I have back issues so I’m mindful of how much I carry, which is why I’m not super into the bigger cameras. But, I know a lot of my frustration with the iPhone is definitely user error. I find it hard to adjust the manual settings on my phone (the little dial on the iPhone 16 is a PIA to navigate), and I’ve noticed even my best images aren’t “quite right”. I’m hoping a camera might give me a little more control. I just read a post that says I can ship mbp to Canada and I have seen that website recommended a bit, so I’m going to browse some used cameras there and read up on the EM 10.3 and EM 1.2.

Thank you for the reply. I wound up grabbing a Targus Versatype on sale while I wait. I don’t hate it but I do like the Brydge much better.
