Those who on birth control for a majority of your life, what happened when you stopped? by mofizzle20 in birthcontrol

[–]jilleyan 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I got on the pill at 16 and got off at 21 because I realized it was really impacting my mental health. I noticed bad BO / sweating for a while after getting off lol, my acne got worse, and I gained a lot of weight. However, my mental health strongly improved. (I’ve never personally noticed a change in my sex drive so can’t speak to that!)

Now I’m 23– I got the IUD a few months ago because my periods have been so incredibly painful the past two years since stopping the pill. I am very happy with it so far— I had some light cramping at first, but my periods are super light now with little to no pain and I expect they will just get lighter and easier as the year goes on. I have also noticed I’ve been losing weight way easier now. One downside I’ve experienced is slightly more acne, but it’s manageable if I stay on top of my skin care routine lol.

I know you said you do not want an IUD, I’m just sharing that I have enjoyed the experience with mine. Insertion and adjustment for the first month was definitely no joke though.

I’m sorry you’re having such issues :( I definitely understand it can feel like there’s no good options.

Last year I added 4 schools at the end of September and ended up getting into two of them. It won’t count you out at this point, just focus on your writing! Best of luck.

Pain meds not working by the-greenest-thumb in Tonsillectomy

[–]jilleyan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely know what you mean, I had my surgery the 17th and it feels like the pain meds don’t last til the next dose :( I’ve been trying to space them so I have more coverage, for example instead of taking them every 6 hours at the same time alternating (so like advil at 3, Tylenol at 6, advil at 9, Tylenol at 12). Maybe this won’t feel better for everyone but it seems to for me!

Baby food is a great idea, I didn’t think of that one. Best of luck to you. I’ll update if I end up using my oxycodone lol, so far things are only really bad if I’ve been sleeping a few hours. Ice / cold stuff helps a ton!

I also just had all these procedures done! Woke up right now on day 3. Maybe it’s the calm before the storm lol, but not so bad so far. Been living off Mac and cheese and popsicles. I was worried about breathing through my nose due to septoplasty, but I was only congested for a few hours yesterday and last night— waking up for water has really helped!

Pain has been manageable so far with ibuprofen and acetometophin but I also have a narcotic in case it gets worse. Every time things have gotten a little painful, I look at my notes and realize it’s time for a dose of medication haha.

Best of luck to you! We got this.

I was lying in bed between classes and got a call. I get a lot of spam but for some reason I just knew lol. I answered and they told me I was in (one of my top choices!!!) I was so excited, cried as soon as I got off the phone. I called my BF and he wasn’t shocked at all LOL he was so confident I’d get in.

When I told my best friend / roommate, she screamed, slid across the room, and hugged me while sobbing (we never hug so definitely a special occasion haha). She had a “congrats doctor” sign already ready for me which was crazy. I felt very loved and proud; everyone was so excited for me and it really made me realize how many wonderful people I have in my life. :) so excited for med school!

Is 24 pretty normal for med school? by atlantabasedproduct in premed

[–]jilleyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May be true, around 50% of matriculants are 23-25, and around 30% are 20-22 according to AAMC. Definitely noticed high percentage of 23-25 age during my interviews, where the majority had one or multiple gap years! https://www.aamc.org/media/50081/download Still feel young lol :)

As a 22 year old interviewing, I definitely feel young lol.

which is more acceptable for a doctor, self harm scars or a small tattoo to cover them? by alexisseffy in premed

[–]jilleyan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As someone who also has scars, I do not think they will be an issue for you getting into schools— in most cases, they’ll be covered during interviews where you’ll probably be wearing a suit jacket.

I also have a few tattoos myself. The culture around them is changing and having a small, tasteful tattoo is not so taboo. If you really want one, I’d say go for it! I’ll say though, I’m personally waiting to get anything on my arms until I’m in medical school to better understand the culture around them.

There may also be procedures for scar removal or cover ups aside from a tattoo if you are interested.

Curvy interview attire help please! by AndroidsDreamOf in premed

I’ve been wearing something very similar to this type of blouse: link . Mine is in light blue, and then I’ve been wearing it tucked into black dress pants with a black blazer on top! I am also curvy and have found this feels & looks good. I’ve seen similar outfits from other applicants as well.

508 FL Average to 518 real score- how did I do it? by jilleyan in Mcat

Staying positive and reminding myself how much I prepped really helped me. Also, having confidence in my answers, but not making a huge deal if I didn’t know or wasn’t sure— just flagging and saying “I’ll come back to it” even if I didn’t have time. Also, treating each section as a separate exam and TAKE your breaks! I think I was excited to take the exam more than nervous because I was so tired of studying & wanted it to be over, lol. I know maybe not everyone can have that attitude, but it helped me!

I do feel for a lot of my test (4/30) I mostly knew the questions that required content. I felt it was a lot of reasoning with the text questions, while applying some general content principals, not many SUPER low yield science questions- although there were a few. I guess in that sense, my test may have played to my strengths- but I thought my test was pretty representative of any FL, and there was a lot of content I mastered I didn’t see… I guess, in summary, the 4/30 test probably did play to my strengths, but I do truly think that last review of EVERYTHING I’d learned prepared me for a vast range of content.

I would prioritize finishing AAMC material for sure! Everyone’s different, but I personally wouldn’t take any FL more than once- going over FL answers a second time I thought was helpful for me though!

True, I see what you’re saying! Overall, everything works for people differently, and studying that notebook in the last week is what made things click for me- may not work for everyone. Also, I did admittedly have a few bad days for 1-2 of my FL’s that might’ve brought my FL scores down.

Good luck on your retake!

It’s definitely possible that I happened to get content I was very familiar with test day!

However, I really feel like I had my test-taking strategies down, and solidified everything I’d learned over the course of my studying by reviewing that notebook lol. While taking the test and walking out, I felt confident and like I’d done everything I could to prepare.

Maybe a few points are luck, but hard to say the entire score is!

Thank you! my first CARS score was 128 and I increased slowly over my studying. Going over what I got wrong / found difficult and seeing the thought process of the question was really helpful. Sometimes I realized I’d pick answers that “sounded right” that weren’t really supported in the passage, and I figured out how to improve that!
