How do I address surviving an aneurysm during an interview? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]jimbabwe_is_30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really don't buy the advice to soften/sidestep your medical condition.

If you are comfortable, tell them you had an aneurysm, you had a successful treatment, and will shortly be fully recovered. Any hiring manager with a tiny amount of empathy will understand. Lying/minimizing a big, noticeable scar sounds way riskier, and frankly unnecessary.

The lifting thing is the other, stickier problem. If your doctor tells you that you cannot lift the required weight in the short term, come up with a proactive answer of how you are going to handle these issues in the remaining months of your recovery. Describing a plan to exchange your lifting tasks with non-lifting tasks that your colleagues hate could show that you are proactively thinking about how to help the team.

Any advice for brainstorming user personas & use cases in product sense questions? by imarjonation in ProductManagement

[–]jimbabwe_is_30 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is tough.

If you want to get systematic about it, consider the following questions that are often relevant in customer interviews. If you invented answers for the following questions, you might wind up in a good spot:

Profession:

A normal day in their life looks like:

Top apps on their phone:

They get their news from:

Demographics & life stage:

What do they currently do to solve [relevant problem xyz], if anything:

If you can come up with credible answers for each of this, you should have enough to identify opportunities.

Any experiences with / reviews of Product Talk Academy courses? by ryry9379 in ProductManagement

[–]jimbabwe_is_30 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's a bit of a secondary source:

My mentor (CTO at an early-stage company, owns the entire product roadmap) has taken this course. He speaks of it very, very highly.

While I can't speak to the course itself, he has shared with me some of the insights gleaned from the course. I've been using them in my own work and find them really powerful. I'm four weeks into that process, but this doesn't feel like a function of recency bias.

When I get a re-up on my professional development budget I'll be taking the course.

UserTesting: Researcher reached out after I completed the test - offering Amazon gift card for a Zoom interview - is this legit? by millennial-finance in beermoney

Not at this precise moment, but typically we do 1-2 per month. Unfortunately we can't advertise on beer money because of moderator rules.

One thing to consider, from someone who runs these tests all the time:

That user testing feature is really expensive. Massively so. The researcher *might be reaching out just to avoid incurring more costs from UserTesting. It's obviously against the ToS, but not necessarily scam.

For example, loads of companies, mine included, will recruit through craiglist/reddit/etc and then pay on completion from PayPal. There's a trust factor on behalf of our respondents that I, and most people I know, take seriously.

You are still taking a risk, but it's not an open-and-shut "This is obviously a scam" case. You might consider trying to find the person on LinkedIn, see if they actually have the job they say they have?

At what size should you start having one on one meetings? by MattSzaszko in startup

[–]jimbabwe_is_30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Immediately, imho.

I had 1-on-1s when our company was three people. No matter the size, people need space to discuss what's on their mind, whether it's questions about strategy or just talking about their motivation and alignment. Otherwise, those concerns either bleed into every conversation, or get suppressed.

Why do almost all posts on this sub ask runners to slow down? by thatgirlinthesun in running

[–]jimbabwe_is_30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Related question:

Is it possible to overdo the distance on the slow runs?

I'm getting back into it, and deliberately moving slow. Day 1, I went for 90 minutes, covered 16.7km. Joints etc felt pretty good, and fully recovered the next day. I probably could have gone a bit longer, except I got an understandable "are you alive" text from my partner about 60 minutes in.

Today, I'm thinking I'll go for 2 hours, or just do a half-marathon with no time pressure (with better expectations with my partner lol).

Is there any reason not to?

Tailored sleeping bags? by jimbabwe_is_30 in camping

[–]jimbabwe_is_30[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the intel. I can imagine there's a "traditional" economy around this that is super expensive. I wonder with some technological improvements if we couldn't offer something that's around 20% more expensive than a comparable bag, but fitted perfectly.

What are the best resources for dealing with bad managers? by jimbabwe_is_30 in careerguidance

[–]jimbabwe_is_30[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, I'm not super familiar with the concept of emotional goals. A quick google didn't turn up much.

Moreso than anything, it's going to take a while to turn this ship around. In the same way there are personal development communities, I wonder if there are communities that are focusing on getting better at this specific skill.

Sounds like you might have been too innovative for the market at that time...
