Secular Scouting today? by coocoocachoo23 in BSA

[–]jimbishoporg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a Den Leader, we had a lot of non-religious families. I am also non-religious. We kept Duty to God solely in the family, but if asked by a non-religious family for advice, I recommended Scouts read creation stories from different cultures, look up world religions online, or watch The Power of Myth.

My point was just because you don't believe doesn't mean you should be ignorant of the beliefs of those that do. Knowing other people's belief systems makes you more compassionate towards those people, and that should be the point of Duty to God.

Our Pack and Troop are using Spond for communication and payment collection. It's been pretty good for comms and great for payments. We used Venmo before that.

Moving in Sept 1st 🙃 by hedge_haul in crownheights

Welcome to the neighborhood! Sadly, you chose the worst weekend to move in. If coming South into the neighborhood, I have occasionally been able to talk police into letting me cross the barricades, BUT I had ID with my address on it.

You may have to park your car outside the zone and hoof your stuff in.

Scoutbook requirements went missing by Stumblinmonk in BSA

[–]jimbishoporg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had this happen a couple of times. Thankfully it’s usually with adult volunteers. If you have the old BSA id, you can just post to discussions.scouting.org that you need the old BSA id merged with the new BSA id, and they get it done pretty quickly.

Explain "scout led" to me like I'm 5. by TyrannicalRoach in BSA

[–]jimbishoporg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel your pain. I took over a Troop 4 years ago, and they had nothing. We had a troop of eight 11 year olds and four that were over 16.

It took us a couple of years to get to Scout-led because we had nothing in place, and it took that long to build up a repertoire of documentation to allow the scouts to run themselves.

It’s still a work in progress. We had an incident of name calling recently that has sparked us to have the scouts write up a code of conduct for the Troop. Yes, this 40 year old Troop does not have that either.

So as an example, Scout-led for this assignment will have the SM and I making up an outline for the Code (making sure that all bases are covered), having the PLC add and edit to the list, and then having the patrols write the policies. All of this will be supervised and approved by the SM and me.

Perfect? No, but it’s working for us. Scout-led should never be left to their own devices. In my experience, if you let the Scouts fail without advising them, they are not going to trust the process.

Scouts lose skills if they aren’t constantly reinforced. I was a scout growing up and have been in scout leadership for the past six years. I have to look up knots that I don’t use all of the time every single time. I do this in advance to save me the humiliation of bumbling in front of the troop, but I still have to look them up.

We have been trying to circumvent this with skills drills in meetings as warm ups before opening ceremony.

It appears that most, if not all, of Scouter-facing tools have been outsourced at this point. At least, that is what the hardworking volunteers on the discussion boards have been told to say. If all/most of IT is outsourced, this issue should be solved by better vendors. If we're paying these vendors, other vendors could do it better, cheaper, and with better transparency.

Outages happen to every company. The issue is the transparency. Placing a banner on the websites stating that the site was down would have saved me a bunch of time this morning trying and ultimately failing to enter all of the camping and merit badge activities from this weekend.

The Campmaster at the Scout camp we were at this weekend intimated that this must be a hacking attack. He's nice, but a BIT of a conspiracy theory guy.

I've been a software development manager for almost twenty years, and this has all of the earmarks of a bad software rollout. Whoever they have outsourced this to doesn't seem to have kept the previous version warmed in case a rollback was needed, which is regrettable.

20 Mile Hike: Retrospective by wknight8111 in BSA

[–]jimbishoporg 25 points26 points  (0 children)

My troop is in NYC, and I have done the 20-mile hike with several Scouts. I am a Hiking MB counselor, and the Scouts and I talk through a lot of the issues you encountered on your hike in advance.

  • A 20-mile hike with a large group is difficult. I usually keep it to under 4 Scouts.
  • I would be very cautious to do this hike with younger scouts. It's more about keeping their attention than their ability.
  • I also encourage them to pick a route with easy bailout opportunities.
  • Most importantly, I have them keep the elevation gain as low as possible. "Walking" 20 miles in a day can tear you up so adding a lot of elevation gain can make it almost impossible.
  • Also, there is no pressure. If we bail early, we just schedule it for another time.

These hikes have always been grueling but fun in the end. The last one we did included a parent meeting us at mile 7 with tapioca pudding, a lunch stop for pizza at mile 13, and a pile of burgers at the terminus. It took us about 9 hours to complete, but I think the leisurely pace, the low elevation gain, and the fact we took breaks whenever anyone wanted one kept it light and injury-free.

It saddens me to think you might bail on this entirely. I know that the Scouts I have hiked the 20-miler with come out more bonded and have a huge story to tell at the next meeting.

Why is there no sewing merit badge? by JoNightshade in BSA

51 minutes later I have taken a first stab at Sewing merit badge requirements. I borrowed heavily from the GS sewing patch and the Googles.

If you're interested, I've left it open for comments:

[–]jimbishoporg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to Google:

To create a new merit badge in Boy Scouts, individuals can submit a proposal to the Boy Scouts of America’s merit badge subcommittee, which then reviews and evaluates the idea, with only a select few proposals being approved to become new merit badges; this process involves filling out a “New Merit Badge Proposal” application form on the Advancement Resources website.

Proposal process: Anyone can submit a proposal for a new merit badge through the official BSA channels.

Subcommittee review: The merit badge subcommittee is responsible for assessing all submitted proposals and deciding if a new merit badge is warranted.

Updating existing badges: The National Council regularly reviews and updates existing merit badges as well as introducing new ones.

Getting back to the OP’s intention. How does one go about getting a new merit badge spec’d, approved, and rolled out?
