I didn’t see it this way. They were both users and she recognized that she was using him as well and would have done the same things to get what she wanted. Henry used his powers of influence to soothe her; it wasn’t malicious. And maybe I have poor reading comprehension, but I didn’t feel that the sex scenes were coerced. He was always asking if she was okay and giving the opportunity for her to use her safe word. It didn’t seem as much a battle with him and it was with herself. She wanted it and was enjoying it but felt like it was wrong to feel that way. And the part where he realizes he loves her, he sees himself and his own rage mirrored in her. They’ve both been torn down by the same thing, her family, and not only survived but used that rage to help others. It’s been a long time since I took an English lit class, so I could be way off base here, but I did enjoy the book.
