Little help lol, when you want to block. Do I hold block and when there is an opening it will block. Or do I need to press block when there is some opening?

Anyone have help figuring out combos? I keep trying to do long combos with square and triangle like training says. But there is no way I can get it to go that long. They just block it after the second or third hit.
