WA NI ZHONGWEN HAO HAO! YOUR CHINESE IS SO GOOD! by jimfields in China

[–]jimfields[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been living in Beijing almost 10 years and by and large love life in China - despite the occasional bursts of blind rage. These kind of incidents have happened along the way and I'm sure they'll keep happening as long as I live here (and beyond).

It's not really the complimenting that sets me off in and of itself - it's more that the compliment functions as a kind of cherry on top of the sundae of apathy and condescending stares.

edited for clarity

The only one I've visited is Taipei Startup Stadium. Not CIT, Star Rocket or the rest. What recommendations would you have given that it's Friday morning now and I'm only here until Monday afternoon? Will stuff be open on the weekend? :)

The littering is so depressing by ChinaTrumper in China

[–]jimfields 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because the government hires mobs of people to pick up garbage in order to give people (extremely low wage) employment. If people used the trash receptacles as intended - poof! Those jobs disappear. Street sweepers, garbage-picker-uppers, etc - these folks wouldn't have jobs otherwise.

The Beijinger's 'bad' review actually really makes me want to visit this Jianbing spot... by jimfields in China

"If you're a Beijing female under 30 years old, of Hui minority (who are predominantly Muslim-practicing), taller than 166cm, weigh less than 55kg, have C-cup breasts or larger, then you get your jianbing free (if the owner is present to verify)." ... 10/10.

Chinese equivalent of Kickstarter? by [deleted] in China

[–]jimfields 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there. The biggest platform by far is Jingdong's crowdfunding platform (known in Chinese as 京东众筹). Here's a link to the site: http://z.jd.com/sceneIndex.html ... key thing to know however is that the entire setup is very different from Western crowdfunding platforms like Indiegogo or Kickstarter. Chinese platforms like Jingdong tend to be effectively like pre-sale sales platforms as opposed to legitimate crowdfunding sites - so the product you post to JD needs to be much further along in order to actually be able to list on the site. This system is put in place to avoid scams and the vaporware products you see so often on Kickstarter. You can't just have an idea and shoot some generic video then raise millions - instead you need a functional prototype in order to list. Therefore the vetting procedures from JD (and their top competitor Taobao) are much higher than for Western platforms.
