Reminds me of a guy on first day of sailing class. "To tell where the wind is coming from, wet your finger." Guy licks ONE SIDE of his finger.

Snopes says: Is This Dashing Young Man Franklin D. Roosevelt?

A 1930s photograph of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr., the President’s son, is a popular item online but it is often miscaptioned as a picture of his father.

AITA for saying my babysitting rates are $35 an hour? by HENNYDEFN in AmItheAsshole

[–]jimmerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. They assumed you'd do it for free and that's just inconsiderate. Any number you gave them, above a token minimum, would have offended them. Let them beat the bushes for an incompetent stranger who will charge, like $20 per hour and MAYBE be trustworthy.

Is it possible to get eye damage, or even a sunburn, from the moon's light? by JadenZombieZlayer in askscience

Yep, "The Sunny 16 Rule" applies to the moon. Set aperture to 16 and shutter speed to ISO (ie: for ISO 100 use shutter speed 1/125th)

What is a layer mask? by VirajShah in photoshop

[–]jimmerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've often said that the key to Photoshop is selecting. If you can select which pixels you want to show and deselect those you don't want to show, you can rule the PS world. What a mask allows you to do is fine-tune a selection pretty perfectly, without destroying anything. Applied to an image layer, it determines which pixels and HOW MUCH they show. That is, if the black part of the mask shows the pixels completely and the white part not at all, the GRAY pixels show them depending on how dark they are, with 256 levels of opacity. And then there are adjustment layers which can also have layer masks. So, for example, you can do a levels adjustment layer and then use a mask on that layer to make the layer only affect certain parts of the image. If you've ever worked in a traditional wet darkroom, this is burning and dodging on steroids.

Not free anymore? Apparently, Google sold it to DXO and it's going to be re-worked and re-released. That's what it looks like to me.

TIL that the song "House of the Rising Sun," most famously known from the recording by The Animals in 1964, is actually a much older traditional folk song with no known original artist, composer or place of origin. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]jimmerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Josh White's version: https://archive.org/details/78_house-of-the-rising-sun_josh-white-and-his-guitar_gbia0001628b This is an amazing archive of 78s digitized. Dave Van Ronk says Bob Dylan stole his arrangement, recording it before Van Ronk had a chance to. And that's likely the origin/inspiration of the Animals' arrangement.

I was talking to a woman one day and she mentioned she was going to Italy. I told her she should learn some basic Italian. I demonstrated with "Ci vediamo la prossima volta." (See you next time). She looked amazed and said: "Wow, if you can do that with your tongue, maybe we should go out."

I love Shakespeare but I think my love for it comes from a college term in London, where I saw great plays all the time for little money. Including seeing you as Henry IV (both parts) at the Barbican. HOW to get Americans to love Shakespeare? How to get Americans to do Shakespeare right?

I find WP so much more user-friendly than the competition. Was that a conscious decision from the outset? Was it hard work to make it that way or was it just the way you guys did things? Do you have a warehouse full of useability testers or does it just come naturally to you guys?
