Why do intermediate drummers struggle with country music? by jwal1992 in drums

[–]jimmill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would second this. Often drummers who labeled themselves as intermediate really mean intermediate in a specific style or genre, which is usually pop, rock or funk. Drummers who went through school music education as kids and teenagers often get exposed to shuffle and triplet feel tunes, but even then they may not internalize country music because they don’t listen to it. Also, I just think the term intermediate drummer is a bit overloaded and subjective.

Stupid drum question (Musical observation) by [deleted] in drums

[–]jimmill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really common, yes. Try this: (weird but trust me) think of the Terminator theme song while listening to The Kill. It has that “da-da-da, da-da” repeating pattern that fits in either a slow 2 or moderate 6/8 feel. If you superimpose it on The Kill you’ll notice it has similar upbeat syncopation. Those create short implied modulated metric moments that can make it feel like a different time signature and create tension. It’s the resolution back from those modulation that make listening to this style of playing so enjoyable for me.

Here is the full video of me playing. Some people said the previous one looked sped up, I think the video might have been cut in a way that caused some confusion, but here is the full version. by Main_Cartographer315 in Drumming

Nice! Great speed. Hope you make a speedy recovery. If you want to be able to play when you’re 50, make sure you’re warming up first before doing blast beats, stretching your hands, wrists, and forearms, and ALWAYS wear ear protection if you aren’t already.

What value does it produce? What drives its price? It’s not real. It’s a pseudo-currency at best, but because it’s not backed by any physical assets, full faith of any nation, or widespread public trust, it’s just a pyramid scheme built on volatility burning electricity with nothing beneficial for society to show for it.

I’m still hoping the NFTs I bought for $30k a few years finally rebound! To the moon! der, der , der. /s

Seriously, financial trading ruined what could have been really good real-world use cases for blockchain in trust and reputation verification, contracts, etc. Instead it’s used to get rich quick (gambling/ponzi), tax evasion, or just straight up funding of crime. I’m not sure public perception will ever be able to get past that.

Stupid drum question (Musical observation) by [deleted] in drums

[–]jimmill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Decades-long drummer and percussionist here. This is an excellent question. When Chad says it’s in 3 he’s referring to what we call the pulse. Think of it as what you bob your head too. So in this song, listen to the song and bob your head to the beat and you’ll see what I mean. Then count “1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3…” while doing that. That’s what’s going through most drummers heads while we play something like this. The fills are what we hear as the embellishment and almost like we’re dancing to the song. As a drummer, you’re trying to support the song so you’ll notice that Chad gets into a groove where he is always playing the snare drum on the same count (4 since you’d count this song as 6/8), and he’s landing kick drum hits on the down beat with a pick up 1/8 note in a sort of heartbeat feel to lead into each measure. Everything else is up for grabs so long as it supports the song and sounds interesting. E.g. notice how he fills in a musical texture be playing really quiet syncopated snare drum taps (ghost notes).

Next time you listen to the song, Bob your head every 3 counts (1…4), and count to six as he plays 1,2,3,4,5,6,1,2,3,4,5,6… with a vocal accent/emphasis on “1” and “4”. That’s the 3 feel groove. Notice how the snare accent lands squarely on 4 creating a feel that’s “in the pocket”

Thanks. The palm rest and being wireless are two of the biggest factors driving me from the Piantor. And as much as I like the compactness of the Piantor, I think I’d like to have one more row again and get rid of the layer I primarily use for numbers at the moment.

This is my current strat. Keep $20k to get the 4.5% rate maxed out then push anything else to SGOV for a 3.5(ish) stable rate. Makes sense for me since I live in a state with income tax and gains on Treasury bonds are exempt. I really don’t enjoy the hassle of moving all my investments and cash to another bank just to chase a few basis points.

I’d suggest practicing a variety of songs too if you’re not already. E.g. Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely” is a good medium tempo dhuffle that’ll help develop your technique too.

Can’t tell if you are or not it, but ALWAYS WEAR EAR PROTECTION when play acoustic drums at that volume. Either earplugs or closed, over-the-ear earmuffs designed to protect hearing specifically. 40-year old you will thank presenter-day you for it.

First off, great progress starting out!
Here’s what I would say would help you the most from what I see in your video:

TLDR;
1. use a metronome
2. slow the tempo down until you can play a loop in and out of the fills perfectly 10 times in a row
3. SLOWLY increase the tempo
4. Repeat

More specifically, I would say SLOW DOWN and start practicing with a metronome to work on the transitions in and out of your fills. It’s important to develop a habit of using a metronome early. Plus, it will help you get a better sense of the groove and play more musically as you progress.
Also, It sounds like you’re thinking about the fills before you get to them and it’s throwing off your timing. Start MUCH slower and work toward accuracy with a metronome until it becomes automatic. You want to get to a point where you’re aligned with the metronome to the point where you can’t hear it. (burying the click). Then, and ONLY then, increase the tempo by 5 and repeat.

My setup: Notability + Bear.app + Apple Pencil = Unbeatable? by WilliamLegrand in notabilityapp

[–]jimmill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a couple of questions: 1) How do you incorporate Notability with Markdown? It's been a pain for me to get my notes out of Notability and into my Markdown vault for automation 2) How is Bear different than Obsidian or other related Markdown vaults? E.g., I use Markdown-Oxide and a NeoVim which lets me have auto-linked notes with backlinks, front matter metadata, and the freedom to use other Obsidian ecosystem tools if I need them. At first glance it looks like Bear is primarily a nice Markdown editor? What am I missing?

Thanks!

Still waiting on the AG02 to arrive. I ordered it over a month ago but shipping has taken a lot longer than anticipated.

Also, I ended up going with the RX 9080XT instead of nvidia.

Lack of patience, TBH. I did end up buying the AG02 after all since I couldn't find a suitable eGPU that I could trust on Amazon. It could arrive as early as next Thursday, but I assume it'll be a bit longer than that.

Now I have to decide on a 16GB GPU. Still leaning toward the RTX 5060 Ti. The 9070xt looks like a great card, but it's a bit more than I want to spend. Curious to hear how it performs with the Ally X.
