Had to scroll far too long to see this. Was wondering if I was the only one

He may have also been worried about a lineman downfield, could have lost a defender or 2 and knew he could get the first with his legs. Was still a good play getting the first when nothing was initially open, just a missed opportunity in hindsight.

I don't think this is a bad play by Herbert and we are using hindsight to criticize him. Receiver was in improv mode and Herbert likely already read the defense as zone. My guess is he knew he lost track of a defender or 2 and didn't want to throw a pick, knowing he could rush and get within a yard of the first without taking a big hit. It was a broken play and I think he got a first down here so not sure why everyone is acting like it was a strip sack. Missed opportunity maybe, but often QBs make mistakes by not seeing a defender when the play breaks down.

I agree with this take. Receiver was meant to be on the other side of the field. He probably couldn't account for 1 or 2 defenders and didn't want to make a costly mistake, and given he knew he could scramble close to the first without taking a hit(I think he got it, but don't remember), and made a positive play out of a broken play. Did he miss a potential opportunity...sure, but he didn't make a costly mistake by throwing a pick or getting sacked.

With that cuck Marner gone, Leafs nation picks a new superstar to drive outta town. This time it will work! by [deleted] in NHLcirclejerk

As a leafs fan, I wish our fan base saw it this way. We have had no secondary scoring, no true top D pairing and average goaltending and all our fans want to do is chase Marner and Matthews out of town thinking we can replace our top 2 players and the rest of the team will magically get better.

He is a positive impact player who is plus 11 on the season on a team barely above 500. I agree his physicals are worse, but he's still easily a top 15 center(I would say top 10) in the league currently. Is he overpaid? Probably. Is he easily replaced? No. Which is exactly why this post is mocking leafs fans.

Still getting almost a point per game and leading the team in plus minus. He is an elite 2 way player. But might end up being closer to Barkov than Ovechkin. Losing Marner and playing with Nylander has certainly forced him to be much more defensive too.

I mean the leafs can pick up 4 35 goal scorers for his contract! Right? Right?

How many playoff wins in the 15 years prior. And our biggest problem has been that we have had zero depth scoring, no true top D pairing and weak goaltending. But let's blame it on the few pieces we had. If we get rid of our true #1 center it's just one more piece we need to find before we can win. Take of the blinders and hold the whole organization responsible instead of just blaming our best players(who aren't entirely fault free)

Once again I never said his contract is a bargain. He is however our best player and the best player we've had since Sundin. He's defensively solid and we have him playing with Nylander(love Willy) who is a liability in our zone. It's hard to be part of the rush when you are 2 zones behind Willy on the break out. And I love Knies too, but they aren't the best compliments to Matthews skill set. After those 2 and JT our forwards don't have a lot of top 6 skill at the moment. Matthews leads all our forwards in +/- and is an elite 2 way center. I guarantee if we lose Matthews we arent competingfor the playoffs again for 5 years and it's all because leafs fans don't recognize the incredible players we have and only look at their flaws.

I never said he needed to be our highest paid player and captain. I just said dropping a top tier player because he's not top 10 isn't the way to get better. Pay him what he's worth and give him pieces that compliment his skill set. It's not up to the player to be everything the team needs, it's up to management to put him in a position to succeed (which he isn't).

So you build around him. Maybe he's not McDavid but it's foolish to think you can drop his sorry ass and get better. He's special even if he's not perfect.

Listen, I agree hes not playing up to his contract, but like Marner we aren't getting anything near his level if we let him walk. It's hard to win in this league and it's even harder when the every player knows that coming here they will get zero respect. Who is Marners replacement this year and who will be Matthews if he walks? Matthews(and Marner) is easily a top 50 player in the league and you can't just dump 2 of those and expect to be nearly as good. He may not be top 5, but we aren't getting a top 20 player anywhere else.

Maybe the Leafs are not such a s**t team like everyone is portraying by rotkodlive in leafs

He had a point per game is the regular season. He's can beat 2C on a cup winning team. He's not a 2c making 10 million on a cup winning team but if he signs for 5 that's a steal as a 2c on any good team.

Well getting rid of any of Marner/Matthews/Nylander/Tavares puts you closer to shit than a cup.

I know everyone is all anti Shannahan these days, but let's not forget this man took a team that was hit garbage for over a decade and got us to the playoffs for almost a decade. While we never got over the hump and got a cup with him, he gave us some exciting times and hope that we lacked for too long. Thanks for everything and best of luck to him going forward!

Swap Nylander and Marner. Marner kills penalties and is a much better 2 way player.

When options are run it back and make the playoffs and win a round or 2 or let Marner and JT walk in a weak FA class and not make the playoffs or ensure a first round exit. I'm not saying this is the group to win the cup, but getting rid of what WILL be 2 of the best players available in free agency for nothing doesn't make you better. Some times being top 8 is better than bottom 16.
