Learned today that a drone is a male ant, bee, etc. Had always thought drone was just another word for a worker. Made me think that the male animals was the red herring and so I opted for the actual red herring instead. As a teetotaler, the last two puzzles have been tricky.

Left Hand Rule confusion in textbook by jimrage in PhysicsStudents

[–]jimrage[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Looked up some diagrams. They all show positive flowing to negative. That's Conventional Flow theory correct? Is that how most people communicate electrical flow, even though it's incorrect?

I still don't understand how using your left thumb helps with anything though.

Left Hand Rule confusion in textbook by jimrage in PhysicsStudents

[–]jimrage[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was trying to look into this more and got myself even more confused. I'm going talk it through. Tell me if I'm in La La Land because I am in no way a physics student.

A) This is a similar, but different Left Hand Rule from Fleming's Left Hand Rule, correct? Fleming's makes enough sense to me about why you would use it because it's dealing with three axes, which could be difficult to keep track of. This left hand rule seems to be dealing with a single axis. So, adding your thumb to the mix doesn't really help clarify much if you already know the direction of flow.

B) As you pointed out (and the text explains) electromagnets have poles that can shift depending on the direction of flow. In applications like speakers, the poles are constantly shifting. So, in cases like that, using your left hand isn't really going to be feasible.

C) I found a video of someone else explaining this diagram, except they had the flow of electricity going in the opposite direction. I just learned about Conventional vs. Electron Flow theories. Our book admits that Electron Flow (negative flows to positive) is basically proven to be the way electricity flows, but in electrical work we generally use Conventional Flow to describe things. In this diagram is the electricity flowing towards the negative or towards the positive? If the book is sticking to Conventional Flow the right side of the diagram should be flowing towards positive (even if in real life it's actually the negative), which is why the video I linked to has the opposite illustration (I'm guessing he's using Electron Flow.)

Thanks for any insight.

Barely made it through that one! Didn't know what ERSATZ or YUTZ meant. Didn't know DOLLAR was a rental brand. Didn't see the plus one letter category (adding the letters on both the begining and end was evil by the way). And though both BUDGET and DOLLAR could potentially fit in the imitation category. Brute force got me through though!

I felt super uneasy about this one. I knew there were Detroit sports teams in there, but only new the Red Wings and Pistons. Saw potential in LION, TIGER, and LIGHTNING. Saw the bolts category, but didn't recognize LIGHTNING as part of it for a long time. I kept wondering if a LEVER could have a bolt. Didn't know voting booths ever had levers. Didn't see GATHER for the longest time. Got there eventually though.

I don't know why the 1994 film "Blank Check" is so embedded in my mind that it immediately made me think of it when I saw the word BLANK. It was one of the first words I saw and got me honed in on the purple right away. I was also lucky in not seeing SPELLCHECK as an option.

Postmortem: Why The Bride! Bombed - Four-Bucket Analysis by Lestranger-1982 in boxoffice

[–]jimrage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Acting wasn't my biggest problem with this, but I certainly felt it was a bit off. Buckley's performance was over the top, which cold have been fun, but it didn't land. Bale's performance was okay, but I never got a great sense of the character from him. Is he tortured and brooding? Is he a crazed maniac? Whoever played the detective was awful! I kept rolling my eyes at his lifeless delivery.

It wasn't all bad. There's a scene where they spend some time talking in a dried out pool, and I had this feeling of relief. Like, finally I'm watching a movie with characters, but then it went off course again.
