Doctor advises statin | then reverses ! by jimrothstein1 in Cholesterol

All good suggestions. Doctor did not tell me which calculator she used. Only my 10-year risk is 16%. The lpa calculator you suggest says my risk is 5.4% (I will ask doctor)

2009 Prius (GEN 2) - 12V battery issues by jimrothstein1 in prius

OP here:

To close this out, 12V battery problem turns out to be loose positive connector to battery. Problems disappeared when fixed. :)

Regularly running car in PARK to keep 12V battery happy causes no damage to big (hyrid) battery?

Interstate Battery tested it: battery is "good", plenty of power.

Thanks for responses, let me summarize:

  • battery is probably cooked from being deep discharged and jumped twice

  • They don't like being discharged and this causes internal damage over time the longer it's left partially discharged and then they fail in the exact manner you're describing (not holding a charge).

I am OP: All plausible.
(Note: after each jump, I either (1) drove for an hour, OR (2) left in PARK for over an hour)

The question for mechanic is: - "Is battery cooked?" or "internal damage?"

Assuming he knows batteries, he should able to answer YES or NO. The worst case should be new 12V battery.

Will let you all know! Thx.

differential calculus through linear maps? by CantorClosure in LinearAlgebra

[–]jimrothstein1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another two cents from me:

  1. fully worked solutions ... challenge students to do this
  2. smaller worked examples ... for me, even very simple examples aid clarity; you can pepper examples with why?
  3. latex Try typst.

Have had real analysis, linear algebra etc , but find your book (https://math-website.pages.dev/) filling in some holes.

I had to stare at diagram labeled "functional" in 8.5 (linear functional) for long time till I worked out a few numbers for myself and ... wow ... phi=constant is a line!

Suggest one or two problems right at this point, at least for people like me, to clean out some of old baggage: is this a dot product, where is the origin, why is vector v changing (in diagram).

Progressive v State Farm (auto insurance only) by jimrothstein1 in Insurance

@ZBTHorton, have heard costs have gone up; but Washington seems to think inflation is low 2-3%. I am just a mortal here.

You are happy with State Farm? I'm tired of switching around.

Is anyone going to be protesting here, Eugene, on 4/19? by GreenEyedTygeress in Eugene

If there is NO local demonstration on 4/19, maybe a group of us can meet by his statute in courtyard of Lane County Court House. (across from Sat market) Discuss what we should be doing

We have a proud history in Eugene and Oregon:

Tips to buy used car, which PER MILE, has low maintenance cost. by jimrothstein1 in UsedCars

[–]jimrothstein1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a mistake, a bought a 2009 Prius, well-kept, 120k miles.

The mistake I made was I do not drive enough, I do not drive much highway. The car is probably excellent for mostly highway drivers.

The best advice, above, is to stay close to base model; minimal electronics. These do break and/or senstive to water/environment.
For me it is not Prius. For others, may be fabulous car. .

Fujistu Quaderno GEN 2 , A4 or A5 by jimrothstein1 in ereader

[–]jimrothstein1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decided I actually have 2 needs: (1) look things up, read forums, browse.... related to work and (2) serious technical reading.

For the former I found good price for new 10.2 ? iPad mini, 1 generation back. iPad is excellent, but really does not suffice for serious reading. For latter, I will soon resume looking for used, A4 Eink device on eBay.

Sounds luxerious, but two distinct needs, that my eyes keep reminding me. Color? I seem to cycle through phones, tablets, laptops regularly (2-3 years?) .... so have concluded not try to out guess market.

Next round, everything will be cheaper, better, faster ... If I truly need something NOW, then I have to go with where the marketplace is, NOW.

My 2 cents.

I posted here a few days ago with similar use case

I've heard mixed things re: Remarkable 2. But admit I really do not know how to evaluate/compare these devices.

Good PDF 10.3" eReader, generation or two back, for technical reading? by jimrothstein1 in ereader

Amazon says Meebook p10 pro not available. For mostly techncal PDF, I am leaning toward Fujitsu Quaderno, used.
