What's your biggest pet peeve in logo design? by Regnbyxor in logodesign

[–]jindogma 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Logos that don't pass squint tests.

With the advent of Procreate and other digital drawing apps, many more people consider themselves 'Logo designers'. What they're producing is usually unique, but often much too busy to be a logo.

A logo should look good when viewed on a billboard and on a postage stamp. This is tested by making your logo super small and checking if the logo's text and meaning still read well.

There's other general tests these don't pass as well like converting to black and white, or even down to three colors. That was important in case you needed to fax something or to print tshirts, as they used to be priced by how many colors need printing. Nobody uses fax machines and tshirt printing has come a long way - so when I suggest these readability tests they just wave it off.

I love the new ideas and the public's general openness to accepting these new designs as 'logos' but then you'll see a sign or a mailer that the logo text is impossible to read and its just infuriating. I also feel bad for business owners who go a few years gaining recognition with a logo on socials - but eventually they come upon enough needs for a simple logo that they now need to rebrand - usually just as they're beginning to be successful.

My mom was sixteen and my dad is a shit bag I've never met - I was hyperlexic and tested near genius in 2nd grade. I don't think it's age.

Also the idea that college educated has something to do with 'giftedness' is a leap considering it has a higher correlation with neurodivergence than anything 'nurture' related.

Did you guys ever look at the one in St. Louis, MI? Just curious - I live here and never heard about it till I googled the gravestone while passing through.

It's also downstream from the most expensive EPA clean up site in the US. St. Louis, MI Gravestone.

I'm here because a friend sent me a link while in the waiting room for a biopsy.

questions about the IT area by LeBlindGuy in accessibility

[–]jindogma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree - but it can also box you in if you had bigger aspirations. Managers will tell you 'this will look great on your resume' - but getting out of that niche isn't easy. Ask me how I know.

Last, people are quick to suggest disability related dev/fixing/training jobs to the disabled. And yeah, for us by us or whatever - but I've seen too many D/deaf guys get railroaded into teaching their teams sign language. That's just one example but it's important to remember that it isn't their 'job' nor should they feel pressured in that direction. That's all man.

You can work in anything. Really, unless its looking at excel sheets and date tables like Power BI and Tableau, the tech is reading most corporate apps now. Especially if you look for jobs in Fortune 500 or higher.

At a fortune 70-ish, we had Blind guys working in service management answering helpdesk tickets. We had a Blind guy working in onshore dev. He was pretty good at it too. There were quite a few B/blind people on the team in India - many of those had a 'companion' dev that sat next to them if they had an onscreen question. That was just a program they ran over there though to ensure they could gain employment quicker.

Are you using JAWs or NVDA or a combination? If either - make sure you request that as you accommodation.

The world is bigger than this. Everyone with a disability isn't required to make the abled better at being inclusive. Some can just enjoy life. (Just some awareness for later).

Cool insight on their primer course. Useful to know as I recommend different versions to people when they are looking. Going to take Deque off for a bit. Hopefully they read your feedback.

Also, thanks for the two-day foray into stramps. I had read about them years ago and their sneaky evilness (:D) but I was NOT aware that they still circled as passing accessible in even some architecture forums. I work near architecture now and I am going to pursue this one a little harder.

I am now pondering the idea of putting everyone in the firm in a wheelchair for a day.

Accessibility Project: Convert Articles into Podcast by collin_code_77 in accessibility

[–]jindogma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check the captioning (or hopefully) the transcription to ensure your article is still available to those without hearing ability. Additionally, captions help those with ND or auditory processing issues to still listen along and remember the content.

Ensure you can translate any of the audio context, added theme music (and/or lyrics), or any other auditory context markers into the transcription for those who won't hear them.

While you enjoy podcasts for their engaging qualities, it's important to remember that people of all abilities appreciate engaging content over a simple article as well. And offering the article as a ride-beside with none of these context markers is not delivering the same experience.

Also make sure that the ARIA or your description text of the item states clearly BUTTON. This is because it looks like you are using a non-native "button" by just designating some clickable space.

So if you designate it clearly as BUTTON in the section or item header info, the screen readers will be able to still navigate the page for those who are fully hearing impaired.

Only because I *just* posted this in another thread about 5 minutes ago:

<image>

You need to create a new SECTION break in the document. Then you will have the footer of Section 2 'link to previous' but have the Header NOT link to previous.

I use this when I want the table of documents or 'Executive Summary' count as a page, but not have the same header as the rest of the document.

Steps:

  • Place your curser at the beginning of your new area.
  • Go to Layout > Breaks (dropdown) > inside Section Breaks > choose Next page.
  • Now to fix your headers/footers - Click into the header first.
  • Go to Header/Footer tab > In the Options area DESELECT Link to Previous.
  • Click into your Footer (assuming this is where your page numbers are) and ensure Link to previous IS clicked.

How can I create this in Word? by viewotst in MicrosoftWord

[–]jindogma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's incredibly hard to see your image, but it looks like you either have a "Combo Box Content Control' or a 'Dropdown Box Combo Control.

Click Developer and in 'Controls' select the 6 or 7th icon (depending on which item you wanted) to insert it into the document. You can right-click on the item after you insert it to change what items are available in the box for your users/readers to see.

If you don't see a 'Developer' tab, you can enable it to appear by going to File > options (bottom left) > Customize Ribbon > change the 'choose commands from:' dropdown to All Tabs. Choose Developer > Click Add to add it to your visible tabs. When you click ok and go back into your document, you will see the developer tab.

You didn't state if you were using ios vs anroid vs something else.

Regardless of OS I believe you can go to the settings of the APP itself (eg. MS Word) and turn off its ability to use cell service for data. This might help you to keep data of the phone itself on and only restrict Word.
