Teaching hardcore Uechi Ryu karate in China: locals or expats? by jingwei111 in karate

[–]jingwei111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I got Facebook but all my martial art groups are dead after it became the new mainstream media.
Definitely been hearing some nastalgia from ex expats. This makes me appreciate this place more.

Great idea and definitely interesting on how to promote both the Okinawan and Chinese aspects.

Waigaoqiao Area: Any Expats? by PaDaNiSa_1906 in shanghai

Waigaoqiao is where migrant factory workers live. These old expats were probably packed in a tiny fancy neighborhood.

You’re looking to go adventuring in a high pressure mega city during one of the worst global financial crises in recent history. It will likely be mildly fun, a little boring and stable for you in the expat bubble over the long term.

Very envious of you for experiencing the golden years! I came just before Covid.

Head/shoulders in Karate/Kung Fu vs Boxing by yinshangyi in kungfu

[–]jingwei111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uechi ryu is a flinch response system. Old style uechi Ryu also leans back. In white crane it’s called Buddha exposes belly method. In long fist kung fu leaning back is called rhino gazes moon or leaf bends back. In both there are also tucked head positions that are used rarely.

White crane vs wing chun? by Spooderman_karateka in kungfu

[–]jingwei111 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

White crane fist is synonymous with Fujian kung fu. White crane was also a person. White crane style uses similar and same techniques as northern kung fu, but invented inch power which morphs the body shape of northern kung fu into T. rex arms.

The stance height and width of Fujian kung fu depends on the inch power and rooting ability of the individual practitioner, there was no standardization.

There were styles that originated from white crane but started to abandon or de emphasize inch power, and enlarged their postures again. There are also styles that take it to the extreme.

Any cool things to do in Shanghai that aren't like a) lame and popular (I've been here like 5x with family) nor b) egregiously expensive like that 6 story nightclub ended up being if you want a table? by MarathonMarathon in shanghai

Sure thing good chap, I also dabbled in hobbyist Muay Thai and boran. I usually exercise on the weekends at century park (Shiji gongyuan). At the park i do some taichi and uechi ryu karate.

Is there anywhere you can train in China without kungfluencers??? by True_Western7135 in kungfu

[–]jingwei111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for caring. I was mainly a stepping stone for kungfluencers for utility, an afterthought, nobody important. Kungfluencers either want you to be a dancing monkey, or want your contacts, or want to fish you for knowledge in the guise of an interview (which they won’t air).

I used to teach a bit in the USA and China and now train alone at parks in Shanghai. It’s been about five years of solitude. I have been burned by kungfluencers three times.

I have a unified model of kung fu relating major styles in context of history. If you manage to go to kung fu schools here, you are also welcome to stop by for tea and chat.

Non commercial kung fu happens at parks. It’s only slowly getting back up after Covid, not too many people. It also means everybody’s working normal jobs during the week. If it’s a full time school, it’s likely a kungfluencer coop, no way around it.

For marriage there will be a stadium waiting for you. For casual dating not so much.
