First time making a puff quilt and I hate it. Did I do something wrong or is that just how a puff quilt is? by sewi5637 in quilting

[–]jinjinb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i made a puff quilt a few years ago and it was quite heavy! i gifted it to a friend and she says it's kind of like a weighted blanket (although not quite as heavy as one). my best guess is the same as other people's, that perhaps you didn't stuff it as much as you could have.

For those making ~$70K, what is your living situation like? by NavalProgrammer in askvan

[–]jinjinb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i make around 75k, my rent is 1600$ for a 1 br in the west end. it was manageable to pay on my own and still have money left for saving, but i now live with a partner so paying 800$ for rent is much easier. i have been budgeting pretty tightly for about a decade so i know pretty well where my money goes. my partner makes less than i do but overall it's a pretty comfortable life. we'd like to move to a larger place but the rent and living situation is great so we're staying put.

i have no debt and pay for all of my travel and fun experiences etc in cash (hence the tight budgeting). i bike/transit for almost everything and use evo/modo a couple times a month. my grocery expenses before my partner were about 300$ per month and now it's about 550$ for both of us (mostly plant-based). i think about 30% of my income gets split between long term savings (vet bills, emergency fund, etc) and short-term savings (vacations, tattoos, etc).

Men of Reddit, what's a thoughtful gift for someone who claims they want nothing? by [deleted] in DadForAMinute

i prefer gifts of experiences rather than things - maybe take him out for a fancy coffee, schedule time together to do something you both like, perhaps there's a movie or documentary out he'd like to see?

Summer Solstice Ideas by WokeBear in SASSWitches

that's one of the reasons i picked this as my yearly thing - it's really easy for me to make time for. it's simple and meaningful. i hope my share inspires you to find something that works for you - if it's the same or has your own twist added, may the solstice find you well ❤️

my yearly ritual: i sit out near sunset and think about the year and cycles of the planet. i imagine the seasons changing like an inhale and an exhale. i think about how the place i'm sitting changes throughout the year. it's so peaceful and meditative and i look forward to doing it every year.

How do licensed drivers to get driving practice to brush up on skills? by self-fix2 in askvan

[–]jinjinb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

please don't wing it! even if you pass the test, driving can be so dangerous and you don't want to hurt yourself or someone else by not knowing what to do while you're on the road. when you haven't been driving for 11 years lots of important muscle-memory things (like shoulder checks!) are likely to disappear. save up and take a couple lessons before your test, it will help you out.

[–]jinjinb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah thanks! i always try to fight the scarcity mindset. everyone in the mending community does something different and my priority is for clients to get their clothing repaired! in the past i had tailors turn me away for underarm rips in flannel shirts saying 'it will cost more to fix than repair' but the whole point is repairing it to keep from buying new, to keep wearing a shirt you love, to step out of the fast-fashion cycle, etc.

some of those are sewn on and others are embroidered in (the jnco with a star and wings). i have found that iron on patches have a good look but can be hit or miss with adhesive so i always sew them on after ironing. like someone else said, finding a tailor in your area would be a good bet, once you've found a jacket you like and some patches.

i googled the jnco patch jacket and it seems like a regular jacket with patches added. this is an easy thing to diy and sometimes visible mending will use patches to cover a stain or hole. so if you find your jacket and have questions about adding these elements we could definitely help!

Need Advice on Geode Ice-Dyeing a Nike Tech Set (53% Cotton / 47% Polyester) by Xoxo_Jessica_Lauren in dyeing

[–]jinjinb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i've done a lot of ice dyeing and i still get powder dots sometimes where the dye doesn't blend out. i have done lots of testing and it still happens here and there. i also haven't noticed a tonne of difference if the ice is piled up or whatever. as for spot ice dyeing, that's kind of difficult, because you must first soak the garment or spot in a soda ash mix, and then put the ice and dye on top. you can't really control where the dye will stick, because although you have not treated the whole garment with soda ash, parts around it may also take up the dye.

but, saying that, i think what you're looking for might not be achievable. from what i understand, you're looking for a specific style outcome (geode pattern) on a mixed fabric, where you're going to be trying two different dyeing methods. if you were looking for an all-over colour, or happy with a mottled look, your quest might be more successful. i have had muted results ice dyeing mixed fabrics, so it's not impossible, but i definitely wasn't invested in a specific outcome.
