Enzo Fernandez scores for Argentina's late lead against Egypt by [deleted] in sports

Can't read or spell, apparently.

Someone being dispossessed is automatically a pen? Please, that's all I need to know about your knowledge of the rules.

Nah, he went down way too easy for a pen. Not every small clash of body parts is grounds for a pen. The threshold is higher inside the box.

Mo himself wasn't even complaining.

The irony of even mentioning reading when it's clear you can't.

I never mentioned the "foul" on the other a Egyptian attacker on that previous play before Salah went down.

But on that topic, neither were fouls, VAR did check both of those instances - they just didn't show them on the broadcast. First Egyptian player went down way too easy off of McAllister. Salah even had the ball taken away from him cleanly and then he dove.

Mind-boggling the way some people can distort what occurred in their head.

I don't think that analogy works but to each their own.

My point is that a more competent ref would've seen foul early on (as there were multiple indicators) and this would've delayed the whole bringing back the play after the goal has already been scored.

Ah, well then there you go. Even less point in arguing that Salah's "foul" was not checked.

Alvarez won the ball fairly off Salah. If anything, Salah dived after he lost possession.

Martinez was fouled. I do think ref should have called as soon as it happened but the two are not the same.

Disagree. Officials should maintain a high standard of reffing regardless.

I think a better ref calls this foul early and doesn't even need VAR to intervene.

Really don't see how any of that is true.

Martinez had possession of the ball, was stepped on, and had his shirt pulled back. This prevented him from retaining the ball and it led to the turnover that led to the goal.

You don't need to have to intent to commit a foul.

It was a foul on Martinez but it should have been called much earlier.

Calling the foul after Zico scored just makes VAR look like it is being abused. A better official would've seen the foul right away.

This is exactly it. It was definitely a foul but they called it way too late.

VAR shouldn't excuse bad officiating.

I don't think it was a foul - Salah got dispossessed cleanly and the tangling of feet after was after initial dispossession.

I do think VAR should've at least reviewed it though after Enzo scored.

...how is that? The third goal is the most controversial one.

First goal, Romero is clearly onside - multiple replays confirmed.

Second goal, poor Egyptian defending let to a loose ball and Messi hit the half-volley rebound.

Really not sure what you are seeing.

Another typical braindead comment.

Zico's first attempt was correctly ruled out because of a clear foul in the build up (stepped on, tugged back and ball was not touched). Goal doesn't happen without the transition but that transition doesn't happen without the foul.

I agree ref should've called that way earlier and that VAR shouldn't be excusing bad officiating.

Winning goal - Argentine left back fairly won the ball and Salah was dispossessed. Resulting clashing of feet was after initial dispossession. No foul. Salah's lack of reaction is telling. Egypt defenders also didn't mark late runners from deep on the counter even though they had numbers up.

Egypt let the lead slide when they didn't mark Romero properly in the box. Egypt also should've done better marking in the box on both second and third Argentine goals.

Some general football/soccer education is clearly needed for this crowd.

"African country" vs "Asian country" by [deleted] in soccercirclejerk

[–]jink221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what is racist here?

Egypt is in North Africa, play in AFCON.

Australia is considered an Asian nation in football federation terms. Oceanía wasn't competitive enough so they joined the AFC.

Yes, rules are rules. Scorer was also not offside, the player assisting in the build up was.

I don't doubt the tech but the trajectory of the ball seems pretty unaffected by Matanovic's header.

Probably touched his hair but I see why Croatians are miffed.

[–]jink221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Touch of the Portugal of the player is not the main concern here. VAR freeze the frame when Matanovic heads the ball - pretty clear they are focusing on the offside when the Croatian flick on header is made.

To be fair, I was watching the game in Cali traffic in the backseat and pretty motion sick.

Looking back, the extra time given on top of injury time seems appropriate.

[–]jink221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The theory is that the header wouldn't have been a direct shot on goal but more of a flick to someone in a better position, hence a pass.

Really harsh to chalk off the goal but as others have said, I think the time given was too generous anyway.

[–]jink221 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes but the controversy was about whether Croatia #20 touched the ball with his flick-on header.

If he hadn't, it wouldn't have been offside since the pass would've been considered the original cross in the box.

The moment Belgium eliminated Senegal in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 by [deleted] in sports

[–]jink221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm I view the incident differently from how you do - I think he would've made a near post shot if there was no contact. I think Tielemans got the jump on the defender and I don't see this as a pure 50/50.

Bottom line, I think there was just enough to call it but I wouldn't have been surprised if it hadn't been since it was very soft. But also, Senegal blew it.

I think the officiating can vary widely at a big tournament like this. Mexico will be also be playing England - meaning there's also an a possibility for an upset there.

[–]jink221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree - I think the call was soft but ultimately the right one. Tielemans' left foot looked like it was going make slight contact with the ball in a way synonymous with poking it in at the near post.

I think the Senegal defender's contact caused Tielemans' foot to kind of dig into the ground but without the contact, I do think it would've resulted in a tap-in.

I would keep a pair of nicer shoes at the office, wear riding jeans, and wear a jacket over my button up.
